Thumper has the option of three litter boxes when he is out of his cage (one in his cage and two out). Everyday for a about a week he has dug out all of the litter and hay in the exact same box. It’s a cat litter box so I know it’s not too small because that was an issue before with one of our buns when he had a small box. What could the problem be? How can we stop this from happening again?

If he’s digging in the same box every time, but he doesn’t dig in the other boxes, maybe it’s the placement of the box that is making him dig everything out for some reason? Does he have a bunny digging box? I’d maybe replace that one litter box with a cardboard box filled with digging materials to play with and see if that helps. If he still digs everything out, at least it will be digging play material instead of hay and litter bedding.

Some young man drives me BONKERS with his digging in the litter tray… agreably in one more than the other, even though I swapped them around…

Can I just take out the litter and replace it with strips of newspaper for a digging box?

That’s what I did – -I used a shallow card board box and filled it with strips of paper.  They dig in it happily.  But they also pee and poop in it sometimes, so I do have to rotate out the box and filling.

If digging in a dedicated bunny potty box is a problem, I’d recommend the litter box screens sold in the BinkyBunny store.  These are great and have the added benefit of reducing the amount of litter you use.  My buns no longer try to dig in the their litter box.

Unfortunately Henry doesn’t care that there is no litter in the top box…. he digs the top plastic litter tray to try to get to the bottom one…..

I’m thinking of buying the playpen balls for kids and will put them in a cardboard box…. I don’t think he’d pee on that…. but on screwed up paper balls, he gleefully does !
