Heading to my local rescue this afternoon to pick up a new little dude, who I will be fostering in hopes we can bond him with my current bunny!

He has a very sad back story, and I really haven’t been able to stop thinking about him since I heard it! The shelter staff tells me that he was once very friendly, and about 3 years ago was adopted by a staff member without a home visit. He came back a few months later, almost dead from dehydration and starvation.

He has gotten a lot better over the years, but never regained his full personality, and hasn’t been adopted due to his shy nature. The shelter staff thinks that a loving home and a friend might be just what he needs to get his confidence back.

My current bunny’s mate passed away just over a year ago, and we have been trying to re-bond her… (I have some other posts on that adventure). She gets to meet this little dude this afternoon, just to make sure she doesn’t hate him on site, and then I will bring him home and let him get a bit settled before really starting bonding. I am so excited and nervous!

Wish me luck, patience, and happy bunny love-vibes!

The first date went pretty well (at least compared to many other dates that Bertha has been on). And boy is he CUTE! I’ll try to post some pics once he settles in.

She was not aggressive towards him at all, and he really really wanted to mount her! She would put her head down for grooms, he would mount her head, the HRS helper would push him so he was in the “correct” orientation. She actually let him mount her for a few seconds calmly before running off. He tried to chase her, but we didn’t let him.

So, he is now home with me in foster care, and I have their two separate pens set up a few inches apart. Plan is to let him settle in a bit and do some pre-bonding cage swaps before taking them on a second date.

I’m going to keep a bonding journal to track his progress. Feeling hopeful!

Congratulations! That sounds really promising so far! I’m so glad that you’re taking this boy in after all he’s been through. I can’t believe a staff member of the rescue would treat an animal that way. Can’t wait to see pics
