Hi there! My 5 lbs bun drinks so much water (about 15 oz a day) and pees so much. I have to empty his litter at least he once a day, sometimes twice a day. He pees so much and just sits in his litter box, so he has started developing some urine scald. He’s been to the vet and has x-rays taken, blood and urine work done. Doesn’t seem to be anything wrong. The vet thinks it’s urine sludge, but he’s not very rabbit Davy (sadly, he’s the only vet in town that even accepts rabbits, as I live in a small town). His urine is rust coloured, but there’s no evidence of calcium or chalk in the litter or on the paper towels I’ve place in his litter box. Any thoughts? Is he just a normal bunny that drinks a lot or is there possibly something else? Thanks!

Rust colored pee in rabbits is not considered an observandum. Huge amounts of pale or clear urine is actually much worse. Bladder sludge looks like the third pic on this page, the two first pics are of normal rabbit urine:

But your rabbit is still drinking about double the amount he should, considered his weight. Sometimes rabbits drink lots because they are bored or very hungry.

You could write to Dana Krempels at AllExperts and ask. She’s a very bunny-savvy biologist:
