We adopted Clover about a month ago from a friend. My friend never had her spayed, so I gave her a month to get accustomed to her new home and she’s at the vet now getting spayed. She’s almost 2 years old. I usually keep her cage near our family (she has a dedicated area in the main living area), but I’m thinking I should probably move her to a smaller area in a room by herself so she can have some peace and quiet (we have 3 kids that can get a little loud sometimes). Do you think that’s best? If I keep her separated, how long should I keep her in there? I have a room that we seldom use and I blocked off a corner of the room to give her a little room to roam, but it’s smaller than her usual roaming area. And how can I keep her comfortable during healing? And is there anything I should keep my eye out for?

I wouldn’t move her if I were you, it might cause extra stress and you need to be able to keep an eye on her anyway.

You need to make sure she is eating and drinking, peeing and pooping. Keep her warm. Don’t let her jump around too much, she probably won’t feel like it anyway to begin with but she needs 5 to 10 days to recover.

Mine was done at 2 too.

After the op, Clover’s body temp will most likely drop so keep her warm, either with a fleece over here, or a hot water bottle covered by a towel / tshirt can be of good too, but make sure she can get away if she needs to.

Make sure she doesn’t chew on her stitches. Keep an eye the incision doesn’t get raw/inflamed/bleed/red/infected….

Get all her favourite, high value treats.
Getting her to eat asap (& poop) is the MOST important job when she comes home. You should be prepared to syringe feed her in case she doesn’t want to eat on her own. I tried every treat under the sun and eventually madame decided she would deign to nibble on a rose petal !! So i went hunting around the neighbourhood for rose petals !!! LOL

I should think the kids would be good for a day or two wouldn’t they – then she’ll be back to her herself consciouswise, but prevent her from jumping/binkying stretching up anywhere. Your vet will prob want to see her on a follow up visit and then she can have floor time (still no jumping) after a week.

Her poops will be of varying shapes and sizes for a while – don’t worry too much for the first week or two, just as long as she’s eating, pooping and weeing.

            Please, keep us updated

I have her in a room right next to where she normally sleeps. I keep the door closed when kids are loud and open it other times so she can go to her usual space if she wants to.

She hasn’t eaten yet, but she did drink some water. I have pellets in there and bell peppers. I will try to entice her with her favorite treat just to get her to eat, hopefully soon.

I just had my girl spayed (she is one year old). I was very worried when I brought her home because she was not eating or pooping and she was grinding her teeth which she had never done before. She ended up going back to the vet for the day . They gave her a med to help her poop and Critical Care (syringe feeding). When she came back home I just made sure there were lots of soft blankies and warm places for her to lay down and rest. She was first most interested in hay when she decided to eat on her own. She is excellent now and binkying all over (it’s been one week today).

Sorry I never responded! I didn’t realize more people commented. Bun is doing great! She ate very little for the first day….she did take a few treats, but that’s about it. The second day she hardly ate, but she pooped and peed, so I knew something was going in. And I think by day three she was eating much more (it took her about a week to get up to her full diet though). But she’s doing really well now, basically back to normal.
