Im looking for a new hutch for my bun (it is single story and about 1m long. I feel the one he has now is too small! He is an inside bun who has free rain of the house when i am home. I work full time so am only home mornings and evenings mon-fri. I am in oz, but am more after a suggestion of design of hutch that works well. I dont have a room i can solely devote to him when i an not home.

Im also after suggestions of safe play things/toys i can leave in the hutch when he is unupervised.

Have you thought of using an x-pen or some other do it yourself pen? You can get some good ideas on housing here:

There are a lot of wooden toys made for rabbits, or willow balls or rings, or things from the house like cardboard paper towel tubes. If you use paper towel cardboard tubes, ones without any visible glue are best. You can stuff hay in them. Look carefully at any toys that you are considering, to see if there could be any dangers when they are chewed. I would avoid ones with beads, rattles or any small pieces that could break off.

If your bunny isn’t a jumper or climber, a playpen can work as a great ‘hutch’, even as an add on to his current cage would could still hold his litter box and food/water bowls, but also have access to the playpen. If he would be inclined to jump out, you could peg a sheet to the top to prevent that. That’s probably the easiest way to offer more space.

In terms of actual hutches, I’m not a fan of any I’ve seen in stores here. I bought storage cubes and made my own cage, it’s about 1.8m long. I open the door to the playpen when I’m home, I don’t trust them when I’m not home You can buy the storage cubes online from the Guinea Pigs Australia shop, or if you live in SA, Browse In and Save stocks them, I don’t know about stores in other states.

In their cage during the day, I leave baby toys such as plastic baby keys, plastic stacking cups, wood chews, wooden barrel roller, a wooden bendy bridge, cardboard tubes (with or without hay in them).

Hi Azerane, my storage cubes arrived today and i have begun building his house. How did you make the ‘steps’ up to the second level? What it supporting them? Thanks ?

Oh that’s cool My steps are supported by the second level and the wall. I have a vertical grid from the roof which supports the open side of the steps. You can’t see it because of the support beam, but the vertical grid is attached to the “roof” grids, if that makes sense
