Help!  My bunny chewed her hock until it started bleeding!

I noticed her chewing it earlier (the hocks have been dry, bare and pink right on the “elbow” but vet said just to keep an eye on it).  Then I just walked into her area and there was blood everywhere!  It looks like she chewed the callous right off.  What to do?

(Her living area is in the kitchen, she has lots of towels laid down and cushions to sit on and when she comes out to play and run around she is in the carpeted living room.)

Now that it is bleeding, you should take her to the vet for some medicine and help. They may cover it up for you and give you something to put on them. Please never leave your bunnies sore hocks alone though! They can become a big issue. As soon as I notice my buns have sore hocks, I put sudocrem on them. Its a diaper rash cream, and its worked very well! Also be sure that your vet is rabbit savvy!

I took her to her vet (the vet clinic sees only small animals and exotic pets) and they said just to keep an eye on it. It is looking much better now that I decided to try Vetericyn Hot Spot Spray. It is a liquid I spray on the affected spot a few times a day and since one week of using I’ve noticed hair growing back already. I’m going to continue with that and hope it completely heals up.

Make sure she has lots of nice soft flooring while she recovers. Memory Foam Bath Mats are wonderful for sore hocks.
