Ok Mr. Bun Bun is molting. (My first molt) He looks terrible fur all messed about and hanging where it usually stands. He is being picky about eating but is still eating good. I found a “string of poops” near the litter pan. His litter habbits are suffering as well. Poop and pee BESIDE the litter tray instead of in it.

Questions: How long will it last?

Can I give him something to help with the hairballs? Like maybe the paste they give cats? But, maybe not since buns can not vomit. IDK…

I do give 2 pieces of dried papaya everyday already.

Also, he is getting brushed daily (well mostly twice a day) during the molt.

String of pearl poops are a natural way for your bunny to pass ingested fur. It is when the poops become double poops (two squished together) or larger and more egg shaped that is cause for concern. The string poops indicate a gut that is working at the speed it should, the double or larger egg poops with fur show that your bunny may be having trouble passing the fur as their gut has slowed down. Keep doing what you’re doing with daily brushing and make sure he stays hydrated to help keep things moving along with eating lots of hay.

Never give a cat fur ball treatment to a rabbit. Those treatments are designed to coat the hair so that it slides through more easily, however that coating prevents the fur clumps from being broken apart to smaller clumps like what needs to happen in a rabbit’s gut for them to pass the fur safely.

A great way to get off excess fur after grooming with a brush is to wet your hands, shake off the excess and smooth all over bunny. You get a lot of hair off this way that would otherwise be licked off. Rub your hands together to get the fur off and repeat. Also great to get fur off the belly and hard to groom areas like around legs.
