I have a big piece of cardboard that I prop up against the wall. It forms a tunnel and Bonny LOVES tunnels. She goes in one side, out the other, turns around, and goes back in. Randomly she likes to go to the middle of the tunnel and thump. (She’s 4 lbs, but the thump is amazingly loud for such a small bunny!) She has thumped before when she was annoyed with me, but this is a fun thing… so I was curious–what does this thump mean? It doesn’t seem to be a scenario where she’s annoyed, just happy.

I think sometimes they can thump when they’re excited! Charlie thumps sometimes when theres nothing that I would think would scare her…will be running around like a maniac and just thump a few times – she actually woke me up the other night running around and thumping..when I went to check on her she just looked at me like what?

I know it can mean that they are being threatened or scared by something, for example another animal. But that doesn’t seem to be the case here. Probably there’s something she see’s that bothers her, or is there another animal nearby when she thumps?

My Poe thumps sometimes when he’s excited that something really good is happening. Other times je thumps when he’s annoyed or warning me or Annabel (his bonded bun) about something scary. In his case, I interpret a thump as any kind of arousal — happy, scared or mad.

In the wild, bunnies will thump to warn others of danger. House Bunnies tend to thump for the same reason but some seem to do it out of excitement as well. Mine like to thump in the middle of the night to scare the pants off me.
