I’m a first time bunny owner and my little guy’s name is Freddy. He’s six months old and I’m having a very hard time getting him in his vest. It’s a vest, not a halter. I would love to be able to take him on walks. I’ve heard it’s a slow process, but I’m just not making any progress here. He starts freaking out when I’m trying to attach the velcro straps under his neck and it almost feels like there isn’t enough room to do so even though I know he has a skinny little neck. Does anyone have any helpful tips that will get him in his vest before he’s ten years old??

Sorry – I’ve never used a vest. I do know that getting any animal used to a new piece of gear, you want to start by putting it next to the rabbit while he gets a treat. Let him sniff it and become familiar with the sight and smell of the vest. Then try 10 minute sessions with him wearing the vest while getting treats. Carry on from there. That’s the basic adjustment period, but I’ve never used a bunny vest myself.

Is your best the one that also has little clips that tighten and loosen? I have one that is blue that has Velcro straps and little clips. Honestly with Bilbo I just had my sister hold him and put it on him. Once it was on him he calmed down. He just didn’t like being held and restrained. Eventually he’ll get used to the process of putting it on. Are you positive the harness isn’t too tight? If it feels tight around his neck you should bunk up a size. The reason I asked about the straps/clips is because those were the hardest thing for Bilbo and I actually loosened them most of the way then when they were clipped I’d tighten them to where they were close to his neck but not pushing on it. I also, before I actually put him in the harness, would lay the harness/vest loose on his back kind of like you would for a blanket on a horse before you just strap the saddle on. Might try that. Although you may consider getting a bigger vest because if it’s right now, it’s only going to get tighter as he fills out.
