I know that corn is a real no no for bunnies because of the husk and potential stasis risks. I never feed Joker any straight corn although he has had a few pieces of popcorn before I learned about the dangers of husks and was completely fine. I just went through all his treats and saw that they are made of either cracked corn or ground corn. Again, he’s been eating these with no problems at all for the past 6 months since I got him. Is cracked or ground corn as bad as a normal corn cob since there is less husk danger? In other words, if I feed him these treats is he at a stasis risk or is it just not good health wise? He has a very healthy diet, he loves his hay and eats about half a cup of pellets a day. He has fresh veggies every day as well.

The deal with corn is mostly about the husks and the risk they get stuck in the intestines and cause blockages – or even get stuck between teeth and cause mouth pain and inflammation. I don’t think ground corn is as dangerous at all. It’s not very bunny appropriate (because it’s a type of grain, grain/cereal isn’t great for buns), but since it’s just treats, I take it he’s not getting a huge amount of it.

There are two dangers with corn, the first is the husk as mentioned though I’ve never had trouble with toys that had dried husk, i suspect the fresh husk strings would be more likely to get caught.

The second and likely more dangerous is the hull of the individual corn kernels. The hull of the kernels is indigestable and if not chewed properly can cause blockages in the gut.

Azerane is right of course, the hulls should be avoided. Properly ground they wouldn’t present a problem, rabbits need quite a lot of indigestible fiber. But it must be ground or very thoroughly chewed, and how thoroughly your bun chews is of course a factor you can’t control. Rabbits should never get those dried corn cobs you often see in pet stores. They shouldn’t even sell them =(
