We have a Rex around a Year old. The other day he seemed lethargic: laying in his cage, kinda meh, would still come out and play but for a few minutes rather than an hour before going back in, but our A/C was busted and having the fan near his cage perked him up. So I attributed his less than energetic self to “screw it it’s hot.”
Tonight he’s not displaying any interest in food even mint which is his favorite leaf. He sniffed his pellets and didn’t eat. He did eat a small peice of bananna I gave him to test if he was refusing all food, so that I thought was encouraging. He’s not not hunched up in a ball, nor is he grinding. He’s just laying in his corner. He’s laying lanky-like spread out. He came out for a few minutes and went back in. He’s also shedding allot. Earlier it looked like I woke him. ( Hard to tell since the bugger doses eyes open it seems.) Honestly he just looks super tired. He doesn’t seem to mind gentle prodding to his tummy. I will say the greens they’ve had in the store have looked terrible so the past day and a half his greens have been romain, and of course he has ample access to hay. He was fine this morning and ate just fine.
The animal hospital doesn’t have a rabbit specialist, so unless it’s an injury, no use there. I would have to wait till his vet opened tomorrow.
Could he just be super fatigued? Either way I’m taking him. Just hoping it could be nothing.

He might be feeling a bit under the weather because he’s moulting… have you trued simethicone in case it’s a gassy tummy giving him malaise? Or maybe try putting a frozen water bottle wrapped in a dishcloth in his pen in case he’s too warm? Either way, a vet visit is always better than regret later Hope he feels like himself again soon (((vibes)))

How long has it been since he started acting this way? You said he ate fine this morning? He took a piece of banana, so that’s a good sign. If mine refuse banana, I know something is wrong. But that stuff is like crack to them. You said he was laying spread out. Is he on his tummy of side?

Okay in order. Q8: Have not tried smithicone. Don’t even have it in the house. I can try the frozen water bottle idea though. Funny enough. his name is Chewey. ( Chewbacca )
LBJ: Okay I went to give him mint around 530. When that didn’t get eaten I tried his pellets. So… 4.5-5 hours ago. He was fully on his side earlier, ( like that scary is he asleep or dead position they do at times ) Since then on his stomach either legs stretched straight back or quarter turned quasi on his side and tummy. He’s also stood up for a minute here and there and laid back down. Walked a tiny bit, stretched. Still hasn’t eaten or drink water.

Okay. So I saw his jaw move and heard a soft click. But it sounded like when he chitters when he gets pet. So don’t know if that was a grind He also tried to poop. One looked odd like two tethered together and turned out it was full of hair.

Bunnies often get digestive upset when they molt. They can ingest too much hair and get gut slowdown/blockage. I’d start by giving the bun simethicone, 1 ml, and try to make him move around a bit. It can help to sit the bunny in your lap and elevate its butt slightly so gas can escape.

If that doesn’t work, and the rabbit still won’t eat after about 30-60 minutes, I’d give another ml of simethicone and call my vet.

This is if the bunny doesn’t seem really out of it. Otherwise I’d call the vet right away.

My Chewie is short for Chewbacca as well (he likes Star Wars… long story).

Simethicone is basically baby gas drops. Buns can’t OD on them, so they’re often the first thing we give buns when we suspect that their tums might be off.

Let us know if you try the frozen bottle…

Okay update. As Farnsworth would say. “Gooooooooood news everyone.”
Still miserable looking when I woke up. Did not want to be bugged. Finally got him out of the cage. He hopped around a bit, mostly to get away from me trying to put him on my lap. ( He HATES being held ) Went back in cage drank some water, ate the mint from last night. (Avoided the pellets) Came out on his own ran a little even around my feet, figured he’d be ticked at me. Then went back in his cage specifically to eat. I need to head out for about half an hour so I’ll call the vet when I get back to give him a chance to eat a little more ( he’s going for the pellets now) and poop. Even if the vet just tells me to watch him and call back if he relapses I’d rather be told that than not call.

To that end thanks so much you guys. I was worried cause I know it’s a bad sign when rabbits ( whose every thought process seems to flow chart to “beg for food”) doesn’t eat.
Oh and Q8 also he was a class pet that turned into a regular pet when the kids stopped keeping up with his responsibilities. They named him Chewbacca since he chewed on everything.

Great news, thanks for the update! A bunny’s thought process should always flow chart to beg for food and to snatch food from hoomins =)

Chewie did just that today. Did a crazy vertical leap from an unexpected angle, and made off with a piece of chicken. With me in hot pursuit, he hopped into his potty and attempted to bury it under the hay! Cute little stinker….

I’m glad to hear he seems to be feeling better. Hope it continues.

Back from the vet. Real great news his appetite came back right before We left for the vet. So yea! After x-ray and blood panel. Looks like he partially clogged himself with hair. And his liver just started to enflame a little. Doc prescribed baby gas x and epsom OTC and a liquid diet and carpithod… Or something and crush a pill of it daily. Real encouraged that he should be fine, now that he wants to eat. And first thing the bugger does is go for hay when we get in.
So.. problem and crisis over. I’ll update if he relapses, but otherwise I think I’m done with this thread!! Thanx again.
