Hello there! I think I’m in the right forum. Charlie is intrigued with boxes and I think views them as toys, and he really wants to chew on the corners and stuff. So I was wondering if rabbits can chew cardboard, or is it dangerous for them??

        Thanks!

Mine do all the time – they LOVE it. (Not all cardboard though, it’s strange…)

The danger is if buns eat too much it can block their digestive system – so keep an eye on how much he is eating…

Great to hear, thank you! I had some boxes in my room that I was using to prop up the cage and he was drawn to it like it was cat nip for bunnies! haha. I was worried it would hurt his stomach so I didn’t let him, but now that I know, I’m going to perhaps get him a little cardboard play center or even just a little box he can play in and naw on haha

Some buns will only chew the cardboard, but don’t actually eat it. My Yohio was one of those. He always had home-improvement projects going, f ex he made all the openings in his cardboard houses arched. I had to sweep up shredded cardboard more or less daily.

That is pretty cool how your bun made arched openings! But it does probably make it easier to get in and out of it haha I’m going to try that with Charlie, I’m sure he’ll have a blast!

Luna LOVES cardboard boxes. Lay one on its side and toss an open phonebook in there – Charlie will have a blast!

Mine love to shred cardboard. They don’t seem to eat it, either. I usually give them a sheet of it under my couch, so they can dig and chew, and also one in their ex pen, which is where they sleep at night.

Strangely, my bun doesn’t like cardboard boxes to chew, but when he does he doesn’t swallow it. Keep an eye on your bun and make sure he doesn’t swallow any and he will be fun.

I think some is fine but as a caution, I do monitor cardboard with my rabbits. Also, make sure there is no sticky tape (scotch tape) or hard glue on or in between layers of cardboard. I don’t let my rabbits chew cardboard that is composite/ recycled (the kind you find in small appliance boxes).
