So I took my bunny to the humane society for speed dating and he selected a nice female and they hit it off great. The only problem with this is the bun he picked is obese. Not chubby, not overweight, obese. She’s so big that she can’t groom herself properly and her back is dirty and there’s so much hair. It looks like her diet is unlimited pellets and limited hay (in her bowl is what reggie would eat in a week)

How do I put her on a diet that won’t upset her gut but needs to be very effective? she’s only a year and a half old.

What should I do about her grooming? I know baths are frowned upon but this may be the one who actually needs it :/

I’m happy reggie found a friend but she needs so much help! I haven’t cared for an obese rabbit before!

Oooh, I’m not sure if you should wean her off her unlimited pellets down to limited or if you should just immediately just start giving limited pellets. I can’t give advice there, besides suggesting she immediately starts getting unlimited hay.
I would bathe her and make sure she has a heater to lay next to afterwards and a hot water bottle with a towel. Hypothermia is the real concern, but if it’s needed, it’s needed.
Pictures please! (not that it’d help anything, i just love fat buns)

Don’t use cat or dog shampoo, either! There’s a rabbit shampoo at PetSmart that’s safe.

How old is the new bunny?

You’ll want to make sure she’s on Timothy Pellets and if not, gradually switch them. And gradually cut her down to the recommended pellet amount for her weight and age.

Dont give her a bath, but give her a wash. Wet a towel with warm water and clean her with that. Try to avoid shampoos unless there is a clump of fur stuck together that needs to be untangled

To also help, try to get her to exercise more. Big play area/room, tons of toys, diggy boxes, fleece ribbon forest, ect
