Hey all! Hoping that someone else on here may have come across this issue. We recently rescued our bun, Betty. She’s a holland lol and about two years old. She is missing one ear and we heard conflicting stories about how that happened. The home she was in prior to ours was not a very good one. The missing ear is completely closed up…or so I thought. When I brought Betty to the vet for her first checkup the vet pointed out a little earwax where her ear “nub” is. Today unnoticed more. So the ear is still producing wax???

Do you think maybe her ear hasn’t properly healed? Anything I should do? Or can do? The vet didn’t seem concerned at her checkup and Betty just went back last week for her spaying and the vet told me she’s otherwise looking great (she really wasn’t when we first got her ?) so she seem s in good health. The ear thing just concerns me.

        Thanks all.

If just the exterior of the ear is gone, then yes the ear canal will still produce wax. She probably just can’t clean it herself, so that’s why the vet noticed some there.

It is the exterior that is gone, but the hole is completely closed up. That’s why it’s so strange to me to find earwax there! The only thing you can see there is a tiny bald spot and some scarring. No opening.

Now I worry about earwax building up inside and/or her getting an ear infection that I won’t know about because it’s obviously still a working ear, but is sealed. ?

Do you think the injury just healed that way? I doubt a vet would close it up without removing the ear canal.

Her previous home was really awful and I doubt they brought her to a vet at all, ever.

I hadn’t even considered that an ear canal could be removed! Oh gosh. So many new questions now ??‍♀️ I will try to get in touch with her past owner again. They were not responsive last time.

Does anyone know: if her ear canal is still intact under the healed-over skin…is it possible to have it removed? Is it necessary? Is there a way to tell if she has it still?

It would be normal to sew the exterior shut if the ear canal had been removed. You said the exterior portion of the ear is gone. I suppose that leaves 2 scenarios: A) Ear was severely damaged and it healed that way or B) ear was severely damaged and a vet thought it was best to remove the ear canal. A rabbit with a nub for an ear doesn’t necessarily need their ear closed if the only thing that is damaged is the exterior portion of the ear. Unless, of course, the exposed ear canal is proving to be a problem (ear infections, etc.). Then the vet may opt to remove the canal and close it off.

I do remember reading a case of ear mites that were so bad that the bunny’s ears were lost. I don’t know if the vet kept the inner ears intact or not.
