A bit ago I posted, “hey, I might start a bun rescue, how do I let people know.” Turns out, I didn’t even need to let people know before I’d even decided whether or not it was a good idea– long story short, I now have unwanted buns in foster homes and need to find permanent homes for them.
What I need help with is deciding what’s a good home, and what isn’t. I have this nice guy wanting to adopt the last two buns I have in foster care, but he raises rabbits and breeds them. I let him know our buns are fixed, and he said he’d still gladly take them. I’m going out there with my boyfriend to check the place out before I decide to shoot him down prematurely, but I’m not sure if it’s ethical to give these buns to a breeder/person who already has a bunch of rabbits on his hands. Surely this would mean he wouldn’t have time to let all of the buns out for hours at a time every day, right?
I’m about to send him an email with a list of questions like, “how would you house them, how often would they be out of their cages, what vet do you go to, etc.”
I guess my question is… right off the bat, I feel uneasy. Am I being silly and overprotective? Would you give buns to a person who already has a bunch of rabbits, and says he still has space for four more?

It’s a very difficult dilemma that many rescues face. Are you going to hold on to every animal until you find the perfect home that meets every single one or your standards (and potentially have dozens and dozens more animals building up in your care at the same time). Or are you going to adopt the animals out to homes where they will be well fed, well sheltered, interacted with etc even if it’s not quite to the standards you would like.

If you feel uneasy about it, don’t adopt them out to him. But just because he is a breeder, doesn’t mean that he won’t take good care of a pair of fixed buns. It is easy to be overprotective about the animals you have saved, but it’s a case of finding them a home, or holding on to them for a long long time.
