I have an unneutered male and an unspayed female that I’ve been keeping apart. They’re never in contact with each other except thru the bars of their cage. There doesn’t seem to be any hostility between them but I’ve found that my male bun tends to poop liberally in her presence (the opposite doesn’t seem to apply).

I’m getting him neutered most likely tomorrow and I guess I’m hoping this kind of behaviour is hormone-based and will stop soon after neutering. Is that the case?

I’m probably going to hold off on spaying my girl until later, just because it’s more pricy and invasive so I need to make sure this (local rabbit community-recommended) vet is good enough. (Plus I need to get a job so I don’t have to ask my parents for the money!)

Neutering should help reduce this some> How old is he?
Don’t expect changes straight away. In fact, some rabbits can become even worse straight after the op. But that’s only very temporary!

Are you aware he will still be able to impregnate an intact female rabbit for a month (at least) after the neuter?

Also I just wanted to add that depending on bar spacing, he may also be able to impregnate her through the bars, it has happened before.

Even after you have your rabbit neutered and a month or more has passed, you shouldn’t try to bond him with the female until she has been spayed. Her hormones could cause aggression which can lead to fighting and injuries. It would be best to keep them apart until she has also had her surgery and recuperated from it.

                He’s about 6 months old and she’s around 4.
I do know they retain the capability to impregnate for quite a while after surgery, but I wasn’t sure for how long? Is there a tell-tale sign for when he’s 100% infertile?

To avoid accidental pregnancies after a neuter, it would be best to wait 2 months
