        Hi.

My 1 year old English Lop cross has a bit of an issue…

I just came into the room and noticed that where he was sitting on my wooden floor lwas some drops of dark brown water. I touched it and smelled it – it was the same consistency as water, and had a putrid poo smell… From time to time, I have noticed some water patches on his cage floor blanket over the past few months, accompanied by some browning in the middle of the patches – I always assumed it was just his poo touching it before he eats it up.

He’s eating his pellets and drinking his water.

I did post some time ago about Jon’s drinking habits – he drinks a lot. Way more than an average rabbit of his size should. I had the vet urine and blood ltest him, and she said he was fine and just let him drink. The vet did say he was slightly high in calcium.

What is this discharge? I don’t think it was pee… I’ve never seen pee as dark brown as that, or smell as much like horrible poo…

If it smells like poo, it probably is. Does he do a lot of normal fecal poops? What is his diet like?

I’m currently having cecal poop issues with my girl, they’ve been very soft and squishy, malformed and have left some poo juice marks on her fleece where she most often eats them. For now I’m trialling cutting out all greens and treats (we’re 4 days in) and if after a week that doesn’t work I’m going to cut out pellets too for only hay. Sometimes there can be an imbalance in the bacteria of the cecum, not just the stomach.

Assuming it’s something along those lines, I found these two pages today that have a lot of info on cecal poop issues:
          http://rabbit.org/disorders-of-the-cecum/
          http://rabbit.org/intermittent-soft-cecotropes-in-rabbits/

All that being said, if there is lots of his poop that is watery like this, true watery diarrhoea is an emergency situation in rabbits and requires an urgent vet visit.

He’s on a diet of just timothy hay and pellets – he drinks a lot of water, so for the moment, we’re not giving him veggies.

That’s the thing, his normal poo is fine. I’m not finding any of his cecotropes, and I’ve seen him band downwards and eat them straight from his bum. He’s drinking loads, and he loves to eat hay and pellets. He grooms himself and he likes being groomed and grooming himself.

            He’s healthy. It’s just the dark liquid….

I contacted my vet. She said it’s most likely urine, which can also smell really bad .. I told her it smelled of poo, but she said I might have just been confused. Since Jon is healthy, and the urine and blood test was only done last month, I was advised to just keep an eye on him…

            What do y’all think?

There is a phenomenon we refer to as “poop juice” for lack of a better term. It’s something that happens sometimes. It’s not a huge deal, just sth to keep an eye on. True diarrhea in a bun is, as Azerane says, an emergency, but it tends to manifest as ample liquid stools, often with gel-like mucus in it. The rabbit is very weak and won’t eat, and must be rushed to an ER vet to get fluids and a suitable antiobiotic. It can be caused by bad bacteria or microorganisms called coccidia. It’s very rare in adult buns ( a 1-year old bun is considered an adult in this respect).

Since he’s behaving normally, I’d say this is “poop juice” – a slight leakage of fluid from the rear. It should stop of itself. A very sick bun won’t groom itself. That he drinks lot is good, it’s because he only gets dry food. If you give him vegs, he’ll drink less because there’s water in the vegs. The difference can be significant. When my Bam eats mostly hay he drinks 200 ml water/day. If he gets lots of veg, he barely touches his water.
