How to do guys prevent illness?
My vet said not to prevent fleas with revolution but to use it when rabbits have them … and not to prevent worms but treat when they have signs of having them
        What do you do?
Are there even preventors of cocci??
Mine was initially on a cheap not good brand of pellets but they apparently have something in it that prevents cocci for comercial breeders ( Oakley is not from a neat breeder or anything ! Just she used these pellets as they are had this particular thing in them ) anyway I have him on oxbow and I don’t think that has any deworming things ??
Should I be doing it buying anything ?
I have low immunity so really don’t want to get anything from him either ( I’ll be more at risk than healthy immunity people to cocci etc)

I’ve never wormed/flea treated etc any of my buns and I probably won’t unless they need it. If he’s housed indoors he’ll have very little chance of getting much in terms of parasites, more likely if you have other indoor/outdoor pets.

Coccidiosis is most common in young rabbits up to 6 months of age. Most commonly associated with weaning, change in diet, stress from moving etc. I’m not sure that it’s terribly common in adults. Providing you’re washing all veg well before feeding, I believe the risk of coccidiosis is very slim.

I’d never head of Cycostat before, but it seems to be somewhat common in breeder feeds, which makes sense to prevent outbreaks between all their stock.

              Azerane and others

I rinse the veggies off right before I give them to my bun. That way I can leave them wet giving him some extra water. Not that he has ever needed that I just thought the more water the better. How WELL are you talking about washing the veggies?

Do you purchase that veggie wash found in the produce section? Do you prewash and dry and then refrigerate?

Whats the best way to wash the veggies please?

On the flea prevention…I have dogs and cats that all get flea prevention. From time to time they would get tape worms from the fleas. Should I use the prevention on the bun too? Depending on the weather on occasion I will have a break through flea issue. Usually if the summer is particularly hot it get worse.  I don’t want to make the bun sick though???

I use Advantage Flea treatment every month. I also do worming treatment every 4 months. Next lot of worming is due on the 26th February. I know it’s probably not necessary as my bunnies are always indoors (don’t have a garden) but I figured it’s no hardship providing Flea and worm medication and I’ve got nothing to lose.

What do you worm with Sarah the Gemini ?

Azerane Oakley is indoors and no other pets ( except our betta fish boy Aladdin )
I mainly just worry because although the cocci risk is low in healthy people I believe it’s quite a risk for me if Oakley was to get it ( or carry it)
He has no signs or anything – I just worry…
Also cocci is apparently quite high here – usually the rabbitrys with it sell to petshops so it’s high in petshop bunnies here according to my vet ( Oakley is not from a petshop though)
Oakley has ISS so no veges here for him

I use panacur for worming, it’s a 9 day treatment.

Also Sarahthegemini once every other month may be too much for flea treatment (?) unless you are seeing them – I was wanting to do Oakley once a year right before summer as that’s the most high time for fleas Over here and my vet was against that too unless there are signs of them
Just passing on what I’ve been told the breeder I got Oakley from is very into the treatment side of things for worms and fleas etc and she said once I hear treatment she never sees fleas with that and her rabbits live outside.
I think I’ll push my vet for the once a year flea treatment even though he doesn’t want too.

The worms I don’t know what to use for though -??

I get it from my vets, I’m not sure on the dosage as it is dependent on weight. Last time my bunnies had it, they were a lot smaller!

I’m not sure if it prevents cocci, I’ll have to find out!

Regarding flea treatment, there’s a lot of people that only use it when necessary but my vets recommend every month Bunnies don’t like it though, they have a right strop!

Tracy7768 I just rinse them under running water in the sink, or sometimes fill a bowl with them in it stir it around and drain before another quick rinse. I didn’t even know you could buy a wash for veggies =/

Coccidia is a protozoa, not a worm. Sulfa drugs are typically used to treat infections, but I believe Panacur can be used as well.

I’m not sure why you’re so worried about it though. Even if it is common in your area, food needs to be contaminated with oocytes and then consumed in order for a rabbit to become infected. Pellets, hay, and washed veggies are a pretty low risk diet. The risk is much higher if the bunny is allowed outside where they can eat grass that may have been contaminated by wild animals. I wouldn’t worry unless your bunny is displaying symptoms of an active infection.

As for flea treatments, again, not much to worry about unless your bun is outside for whatever reason. This is particularly true if you don’t have pets. Revolution and Advantage are safe to use to treat fleas. Keep in mind that rabbits metabolize them much faster than a dog or cat. There have been reports of Advantage only lasting a week or two.

I have 2 dogs, a cat, 4 bunnies, and almost 50 birds. Most of the birds share a bedroom (free flying) with the bunnies. On one occasion – I found a tick taking a leisurely walk in the bunny/bird room. I frequently plucked ticks of my bunnies while they were outside, but none of them have had ticks since bringing them indoors. As for fleas – once – I found 1 flea on 1 of the bunnies. I plucked it off, and never found fleas again. The bird/bunny room has linoleun covering carpet, and half of the linoleum has layers of puppy pee pads and human bed pads. I vaccuum/sweep/swab weekly, I change the puppy pee pads daily, and wash the underlayment of human bed pads weekly. I have never found evidence of coccidiosis. I am honestly more concerned about my birds getting it, than the bunnies. Never seen evidence of worms. I treated my birds for coccidiosis and worms while they were outdors. Once I brought the birds in (for the winter), I stopped treating them for cocci and worms. I have never treated the rabbits for those problems, and never found any of those in the rabbits. Even with all those birds living overhead…
I wou;dn’t wory about it if I were you. Rather focus on understanding and reognizing the symptoms, so you can treat if you need to. There are wayyy worse things that are more common for bunnies to be afflicted by. If you browse the health/care section fo the forum, you’ll see the more common things that bunnies are afflicted with. I’d concentrate on understanding those.
