Hello everyone, i need some good advice on this question. My bunny Sasha was eating normally today, lots of hay and a small amount of pellets. I know it takes a bit time for rabbits to produce poops but i’m kinda concerned cause he hasn’t pooped since 10am and now its 5pm. He is still alert and energetic but from time to time he just lays down with his eyes partially closed and i’m guessing he’s In some kind of pain. I gave him some apple chunks to help move things a bit (about 2-3hrs ago)but he still hasn’t pooped. And now i’m looking at him and he is eating hay which is a good thing right? And he just enters his litter box and sits in there for hours with no poop to scoop. Anyone has ideas why didn’t he pooped even if he’s still eating all the time? Oh and he is shedding a lot but i brush him 2-3 times a day to make sure he doesn’t ingest too much fur. Maybe the fur created some kind of blockage? And should i contact and take him to the vet? He had some cheek teeth problems about a month ago too, its because i gave him a bit more pellets than i should have. Thanks in advance, please give me some advice, i don’t want my bunny suffering.

It’d be good if you could make him move around a little, but it does sound like there could be a blockage. The most important thing when a bun gets a blockage is fluids. It’s often not enough to give fluids by mouth, sub q or even intravenous fluids might be needed.

If it seems like he’s in pain, I think you should take him in. If you have baby gas drops (simethicone), you can give him a ml of those, that can help with gas – gas can build up when a bun has tummy trouble, and if the gas can’t get out, it’s very painful for the bunny and it can develop into a dangerous bloat. If there’s a blockage you can’t give motility drugs (=drugs that make the intestines move) because that can worsen the problem.

It’s really odd that he’s not peeing either. Have you noticed if he drinks?

If he doesn’t poop or pee in 12 hours, contact your vet, it might be stasis, stasis symptoms involve cold ears, lethargy, your bunny will be slightly hunched, he won’t eat or drink much, no fecal pellets, and he won’t be alert. Try gently massaging his tummy to try to help relieve gas and Get unflavored simethicone (baby gas drops), and syringe feed as a precaution. To encourage fluid intake try mixing apple juice with water to entice your bun to drink more. It’s great that you’re brushing him often btw! Check if his ears are cold, make sure his temperature is normal, if his ears are cold, bring his temp up by providing him a blanket or guarding him with a heating pad, or if he allows it, try holding him to you (holding my bunny brings her temp up when she’s cold). Good luck! As long as he’s alert and still happily taking treats, don’t stress it too much until the 10/12 hours.
