I took my male rabbit for his castration to an animal hospital and they discharged him to me with little or no advice and he was bleeding when I got him home. 2 hours later I was growing concerned about the bleeding so contacted their out of hours clinic in another city.

I took him there and the vet looked at him and glued his wound. But a few hours later he was whimpering, in severe pain and went into shock still loosing blood. I contacted the out of hours clinic again and the woman answering my call was very unhelpful and kurt. Basically telling me that he has to wait until morning. So I took him a an emergency vet hospital and the vet took one look at him and said what on earth he needs surgery now he has lost too much blood and is in shock. At first she tried to convince me to go back to the original vets but after the phone conversation I had with the woman on the desk I felt taking him in a further car ride all the way there again while he is in shock when they probably will just inject him and send him away again was not going to help him and he would die.

She said that she is not sure which vet is to blame the one who did is castration for not stitching him correctly or the second one for failing to identify that he was bleeding and needed more surgery. My poor baby suffered incredibly due to all of this and is currently in hospital. I feel sick to my stomach at their lack of care.

Each vet I saw seemed 21 or younger and the reception staff seemed completely incompetent to any animal knowledge and gave the impression that calling them was just inconvenient. Never mind the incredible cost to trying to save my rabbits life and end his misery but I can’t seem to find anything about complaining. Surely this is not right. I believe that they let a very inexperienced young vet grad neuter him which lead to the terrible events of last night. Can anybody give me a direction where to take this complaint? The animal hospital treated me like a second class citizen and seemed only bothered about donations even though I had paid them their full asking price.

(Post has been edited by Bam. The animal hospital is located in the UK.)

Oh my goodness, what a nightmare. I don’t know how to go about complaining but I wanted to pass on well wishes for your little boy, I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

He is in hospital, they said he is limp and panting. He hasn’t eaten. Poor thing has had 2 operations in 24hrs and god knows how many injections. I’m doubtful he will make it. So heart breaking. I love him more than any thing. And he loves me too 🙁

This is so awful. Sending out healing {{{vibes}}} for your bunny!

Is there anything on UK vet association websites about a complaints procedure?

Would the vet who saw him at the emergency hospital be willing to give you something in writing about the state he was in when they saw him?

If you havent already, write down your experience chronologically in as much detail as possible. If you’re anything like me, stress can make it hard to recall details at a later date.

A few years back, a friend had a bad experience when her kitten was spayed. It was done be the organisation she adopted her through. Her cat became quite ill but pulled through. She made some noise about it as she didn’t want anyone else going through what they did. Unfortunately, the whole process caused her more grief. ?
I think she would do it again though, as the errors needed to be highlighted and it brought to attention that some individuals were so unprofessional.

I would contact the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons http://www.rcvs.org.uk/home/

Yes, please update us. I am in tears reading this. I’m not in the UK, but I wouldn’t mind you telling us which hospital this was.

                      Hi Juicy

The hospital cannot be named publically here due to Section 3. H. in the Forum Rules and Guidelines. This rule is to protect BB members, not the organisation they may have grievances with.

I am still thinking of Melanie and her bunny also!
