I moved my hutch to give them more space to run around and I was just wondering how hot does it have to be before I have to move the cage? It’s a little bit in the sun and it doesn’t have a top on the xpen is that okay too if I bring them in before dark?

I believe about 86F is too hot for a rabbit, but i may be wrong. You can tell when they are getting too hot because their ears will get very warm, sometimes feeling even a bit hot. I think as long as they have constant cold water, maybe with ice cubes in it, they should be fine. If it’s over 86F though, I would bring them in just to be safe.

You’ll need to provide them with a shaded area, temperatures in the sun are always hotter than the ambient air temperature. Rabbits are prone to heat exhaustion, and even if it’s only 27 degrees (80F) they could still suffer from not being able to escape the sun. If you are moving them between shaded and non-shaded areas in your yard throughout the day, they are better off having the larger non-shaded area in the early morning and late evening, and having the smaller area from later morning to mid-afternoon when they are naturally less active anyway.

My rabbits have never been outdoor rabbits, so I have never really bothered to look into that stuff. Take the other person’s advice over mine, for sure! ?

Jazlyn you are right. And I agree with Azerane too. They need shade. But if you are relying on moving the x-pen around during the day, you migth forget and leave them in the sun by accident. I found that mine never used the frozen water bottles I gave them. They did like to lie on concrete paving stones and they dug shallow pits to cool off in. The concrete stones and fresh dirt (in the shade), are cooler than the lawn. If you can put their pen under a large shady tree, that would be best. The area under a tree can be 15 degrees F cooler than the surrounding area.

I would say put a tarp or material cover half way across the top of the xpen so they always have the choice…. unless you have a huge tree (which doesn’t move, obviously!)
