He has a blockage…. Hay I suspect. He’s always trying to eat the hay…..I used to have a cat that ate it all the time and threw it up and never had a problem.

Vet yesterday and Xrays. It’s too high up to do an enema so we’ve been giving him laxatives. Hasn’t worked yet. And he’s barely eating. I’m so worried. I haven’t had this guy very long but we love him so much….

I’m beyond getting fed up. I just have the worst luck with my animals. All my friends and family are like “WTH” vet again? Why are all your animals so full of problems?

I can’t lose another baby…..2016 took way too much away from me…

        Lots of vibes neeeded please.

Sending Kyle many, many healing vibes! I’m so sorry to hear that he is unwell, if he doesn’t pass it on his own is the vet able to remove it surgically?

Poor thing. I’ve never heard of this happening before. I hope he feels better soon.

Sometimes cats don’t drink as much as they should, and that can make them prone to blockages I’ve seen on vet shows on tv, but I’m sure you know much more about cats than I do.

                        Get well soon Kyle!
There’s also a special paste which has a lot of indigestible fat in it, it coats the inside of the intestines and makes them more slippery. I can’t recall the name, but has the vet tried something like that?
My best friends’ cat needed that paste daily because she always had blockages.

                          Laxatone, Ellie? Or Petromalt?

Yes, it sounds like petromalt could be it. It contains malt extract which cats like, and that helps digestion.

Oh no, Kyle – come on mate !! You can do it…
Me neither, never heard of that!!!

Although I know what laxatives are for I’m not really sure how they work… will they break the hay down ? Or do they just put everything into over drive, loosen all muscles up and it will shoot out in one clump ?

Could it be a big furball (bunny fur + cat fur + hay)? I’m just thinking of my Dyson when I vacuum the buns’ mat, it always gets blocked around the bendy part of the nozzle and I have to ‘hook’ the fur clumps out… (rather annoying as I can’t access it easily).

Yes, is surgery an option ? (even as a last resort)…. Poor Kyle – poor you.

((((( big furry clumpy poop vibes )))))

Vienna, as a rule laxatives aim to make the stools softer, f ex by inhibiting resorption of water through the intestine. Some also act as stimulants, causing the intestines to contract.

With cats I think surgery is a viable option, vets have to do it a lot during Christmas because cats tend to ingest tinsel and gift-ribbons etc. And they don’t chew thoroughly like buns do, so they’re apt to get blockages.

                                More vibes for Kyle!

BTW: if Kyle eats hay, would he like to chew on cat grass as well? Cats eat grass to get rid of hairballs.

Thanks so much everyone. Sorry for no update. We lost power due to a big ice storm and I was at my sister’s place, just getting home now.

I was super relieved this morning. Poop!!! Poor guy, it was like water but had hay in it (I know you all won’t be grossed out by poop talk ) . I’m assuming that was the worst of it. I still gave him half his morning laxitive dose. He ate today and was playing. I think he’s feeling quite a bit better.

The vet mentioned something about if its’ impossible to keep him out of the hay 100% there is something I can give him daily, I think he called it Laxatone. Will have to find out where to get that.

Thank you everyone for all the vibes. I really appreciate it.

Phewie LPT – was worried there for a minute – So glad for a runny poop !!!

I can’t believe though that it would be that uncommon (though I’d never heard of it) as so many cats and kittens hang around horse stables for warmth and food… and so they must ingest loads if it a ‘cat thing’… (maybe they’re feral cats and noone notices if they go off and die… )

                                        So glad about Kyle…

Vienna- I’ve thought about that too but I suspect that barn cats must eat grass. My childhood cat was an indoor/outdoor cat and she ate grass all the time to help her throw up hair balls.

I’m going to buy Kyle a little pot of cat grass and maybe that will deter him. Also my friend suggested get him a bin of hay and cover it with bitter apple and maybe that will take away the temptation.

Just seeing this now LPT. Goodness what a scare! I hope Kyle is okay now.
Do you have pix of him somewhere? I didn’t know you’d gotten a new kitty.

Laxatone was something we used for Tooey while she was so constipated during her last illness. The kidney failure sometimes makes it very hard for them to poop. It’s a prescription from the vet, a sticky liquid though and quite messy, so be prepared to keep it in a ziploc or something when it’s not in use. Ours was a putrid green colour that I couldn’t be half glad cats don’t see colour, Tooey would’ve put her nose up. It’s a sugar syrup and it keeps the colon irrigated by pulling water from the body so things ‘evacuate’ more quickly.

Hi, Mimz. Thanks. I hope you are doing well.

Yes, it was quite scary. And it’s proving a challenge to keep him out of the hay as he is very tenacious and has kind of an obssession with it. I’m sweeping the floor like 5 times a day.

Posting some pics. He was supposed to be a foster. We took him in from a rescue after my last kitty, Savana passed. I needed a kitty in the house. The fostering lasted 3 weeks before we made it official. He was just such a perfect fit for the family. So good with Everly and the bunnies and just like a little dog. Follows me everywhere and waits at the door when we go out.
