Clover is coming home soon (YAY!!), but in a stint of human family drama, I’ve also ended up with “custody” of my daughters Black otter Netherland dwarf, Dawn.   Working on turning Dawn into a house bun as well, and she’s progressing nicely.  Her morning and  evening binkies are hysterical.

Now my problem.  I’ve been told that two females will ABSOLUTELY not get along, not now, not ever.  I can’t find any info that backs this up or refutes it.  So I turn to you, Bunny friends, to set me straight.

Now Clover, as most of you know, is a large American Chinchilla, 12 lbs. She’s very calm, sweet, and laid back.   And Dawn is a Netherland Dwarf who weighs about as much as my pocket lint.  She CAN be a little punk, was raised as a show rabbit, and isn’t used to being a free running house bun.

I don’t want a slaughter, and I don’t want any bullying, I just want them to get along.  Is this possible?

As long as they are both spayed, it will come down to their personalities and finding bonding techniques that work for them as a pair. Remember that ignoring one another is an acceptable sign, mounting is also acceptable as long as there is no fur pulling and the bottom bun isnt stressed, and all chasing needs to sbe stopped as soon as it starts. Try not to progress to the next stage until they groom one another, atleast a little bit

Ive always been told two boys cant live together, much less three of them. Yet, here i am with a trio of cuddley bucks

I agree. When hormones are out of the picture, it really all comes down to personality. Gender doesn’t matter really.

same sex bunnies definitely can bond as long as both are de-sexed, you just need to let your bunnies behaviour towards each other lead the way and go at their pace. I have two males who were both used to being the only bun in a family before bonding and they absolutely adore each other!

A bonding update.   Well, the first few days were intense.  Dawn (The little bun) was very offended that Clover had moved into her territory, to the point of even attacking Clover briefly.  Clover, being Clover, didn’t retaliate.  But within 48 hours, the two have reached a state of detante, if not actual friendship.  They now reside on the same floor space, studiously ignoring each other, with occasional forays into nose bumps and sniffing each other.  They both have explored each others cages (Which looks really odd when Clover steps into Dawn’s much smaller cage).

As an acclimation method, I started by putting some of Clovers pellets in Dawns litter pan, and vice versa.  I also kept one caged while I let one roam, giving them equal time out of cage, and a chance to spread their scents around the house.  I also took a small stuffed animal, one smaller than Dawn, and rubbed it all over Clover to catch her scent, then put it in Dawn’s cage for a couple of days.

All of it seems to have worked well.  They’re getting along just fine, and I expect improvements to continue.

Gotta run, Clover is licking all over my Tshirt and demanding pettings.

Well, that didn’t take long.  After 2 days of chasing, circling, and ridiculously disproportionate attempts to hump each other, the ladies have settled down and are grooming each other happily.  They play chase me, then run around a bit then flop over and do some mutual grooming.

Things are going great.  I feel like the Bunny whisperer.
