I hope somebody can help me
My rabbit Frank was put to sleep the day before yeaterday and I can’t stop thinking that I didn’t do enough..
He was 9 years old and he seemed to be fine prior but on the day of, i found him lying in his cage.. He was unable to move and there was no reaction when touching him but he was breathing.. Even when picked up he just laid limp in my arms.. My first instinct was that he was dying and i couldn’t bear seeing him like that so rushed him to the vet.
They didn’t ask many questions, just simply asked how old he was and checked his weight and said he was very weak and it was for the best if we put to him to sleep.. I didn’t fight it and just wenr along with it.. I just wanted it over with. They did it then and there and that was it
Since then I cant stop thinking that I shiuld have taken him somewhere else or done something more.. At the time i just couldnt stand seeing him so lifeless and i was shaking and maybe just in auto-pilot mode and not thinking straight.
I’ve googled around since and it seems maybe he was in shock over something and could have come round eventually.
I am really heartbroken.. Part of me wants to call the vet and ask why they didn’t give me options to save him.
Has anyone been through anything similar or can offer advice to a very heart-broken woman?

Hello. I’m so very sorry for your loss. It sounds as if Frank had a long and loving life and I doubt that he was in shock when you found him if he was used to his surroundings. It was more likely something much more (medically) serious and he was lucky you found him when you did, so you could spend the last moments with him. He knows he was loved and he knows that you did the best thing you could. I think we all would have done the same.

You must not beat yourself up about this, there is nothing worse than a regret that you waited TOO long to say goodbye by prolonging suffering with unnecessary treatment or ineffective medication.

9 years is a wonderful age. Focus on the good memories and post some photos on here, it really does help.

          (((Frank)))

As the above poster said, 9 years is a wonderful and old age for a bun, they were probably 9 years of wonderful times you both shared together.

I havent been brought similar, but I have lost buns before. Unfortunately I didn’t get to say goodbye as it was so sudden and you do feel like you could have done more, but I believe everyone knows its time and that was there’s. The pain still hurts 10 years on but I look back and smile at the pictures and memories we have (and the occasional scar from a grumpy bite)

I know its hard but I think you did the right thing, I know this may not hold weight coming from a stranger but you can’t hold regret over this, the vets thought it was the right thing to do at the time as so did you, that tells me your gut instinct new it was time and probably so did Frank, it’s always hard to let them go, but having you by his side was probably the best way to go, especially because you got to say goodbye one last time.
Keep Frank’s memory in your heart and remember the wonderful years you shared together.

Thank you very much for your kind words.. I guess it’s something that I will have to accept and I’m probably more shocked than anything as it was so unexpected.
Thanks again for taking the time to write.. It really helps to hear from someone

I’m so very sorry this happened to you and Frank. I’m thinking it was something bad, like a heart attack or a stroke -not just something that scared him. I’m glad you got to be with him to the end. That’s how it should be.

We always feel some kind of guilt or regret when bad things happen to our pets, but it doesn’t have to mean we’ve done something wrong. It’s simply due to the fact that we love them so and feel responsible for their welfare. We always, always wish we could’ve done more -even when we know there was nothing that could have been done differently.

It’s so very hard to lose a beloved pet, they are so close to our hearts. It’s wonderful that you and Frank got all of 9 years together -that’s a long bunny life, and it was filled with love.
