  Hi everybunny — I did a search and didn’t find an answer to this. I have two bunnies who share a small litter box. I’m switching to the equine stall bedding pine pellets for their litter box, I’m wondering if anyone can give me an idea of how long a 40 lb bag will last? I’m trying to figure out if it’s cost effective to switch. Are the pellets heavy?

  Between a medium and 2 extra large litter boxes, I use 1/2 a bag a month.

  Just thought I would chime in here, I think my bags are 33 pounds (from memory) and one bag lasts me five weeks, that’s daily spot cleans of one litter tray (for two bunnies), and also using it in my parrot’s cage tray (although we barely use any for her as we soak the pellets to expand them and let them turn to dust before using them in the tray).

  2 of my 3 litter boxes have puppy pee pads under the pellets. In 1 of them, there is a grate keeping the bunnies off the bedding. In another, I add hay on top of the pellets. The third just has pellets and a thin layer of hay. I change the boxes every second day, but add hay ont he non-change days so the bunies aren’t standing on poop/pee. I find that 1 scoop per bunny per day – is suficient to absorb the liquid and odor. The bags of pellet bedding cost me $5 or $6 each.

  Just a word of caution, I have read that pine shavings can make your take sick when they eat it. Aspen wood shavings are safer. A 40 lb bag will lay almost two months and if you buy from Petco online the cost is a lot less than in the store.
