So, my bun Hero has been sneezing away for a while now, worse at times than at others. Finally after a culture test, we found…

        Acinetobacter Haemolyticus and Bordetella Bronchiseptica

We were prescribed Ronaxan (Doxycylin). So my questions are, have you used this medication before and what results did you get? Have you seen these bacteria before and what were your experiences fighting them!

Me and my buns say thank you!!

Doxycycline is on Medirabbit’s safe antibiotics-list.
          The dosages Medirabbit gives are:
          Doxycycline
          .
2.5 mg/kg bid (twice per 24 hours) Per Oral route (by mouth)

          or

4 mg/kg sid (once per 24 hours) also per oral route (by mouth)

It’s a broad-spectrum antibiotics meaning it will kill a wide variety of bacteria.

Bordetella bronchiseptica is one of the most common “rabbit-cold”-bacteria. It’s more common in Guinea pigs. It’s sensitive to Baytril, so I’m guessing the other type of bacteria isn’t, hence the Doxy.

              A. haemolyticus is resistant to a lot of stuff.

Little update; My poor Hero bun has not gotten much better – she still sneezes discharge out of her nose. What do you think the vet will recommend next? She has been on Doxycycline for a week now. Hope she gets better soon.

I’m sorry she’s not much better. It can absolutely need more than a week on antibiotics, that’s not uncommon at all. The next step would probably be a combination of antibiotics.

Is she eating and drinking like she should?

                  She’s very pretty!

I agree. It can take awhile, so 1 week might be premature.

As I said before Acinetibacters are known for their antibiotic resistance. I did a little bit of research. It sounds like aminoglycosides can be used for this type of bacteria. Unfortunately, they are antibiotics that should be used with caution when it comes to rabbits. Take a look at Gentamycin and Neomycin on MediRabbit.

If continued treatment with the Doxycycline doesn’t help, then I would talk to the vet and weigh you options. You may need to use a riskier antibiotic.

Thanks for your advice guys – Good to know that it takes a while. There have been days where she has no sneeze or weepy eye, which is encouraging, so perhaps things will improve with a bit more time. Will definitely be asking my vet for advice when the time comes. Hero says thanks ; – )

PS: yes she eats and drinks all day like a normal healthy bun. She also flops and runs around. Behaviour wise, she seems very happy.

It’s great that she’s eating and drinking and seems happy and harmonious. That’s (obviously!) very important for her recovery. It sounds like there’s been some slight improvement, and that’s very hopeful.

Bunny bacteria’s are notorious for being stubborn. It may take a longer course of antibiotics to eradicate.

Quick update: Less sneezing fits recently and just a small amount of discharge today. She seems irritated after she sneezes and cleans herself for a long time after, then there will be a long period where she might not sneeze for the rest of the day. Vet encouraged us to keep going with antibiotics for another two weeks and see how it is after that. Hoping that it works.

Still interested to hear anyone else stories about treating snuffles and these bacteria with different antibiotics.

Yay! Keep it up! I think having an extra long course is good, even if her symptoms improve, just to be safe.
