        Hi everyone,

My rabbit had a yeast infection in both ears about 3 weeks ago and my vet started my rabbit, Almond, on Mometamax ear ointment. It’s really thick and can cause rabbits to be disoriented. I called my vet and she’s not concerned about his balance or side effect issues; she said they should resolve. I’m more worried that he’s not eating as much lately… he has unlimited fresh hay, a portion or Timothy pellets, and veggies as well. I’m wondering if his lack of appetite is from the medicine or his balance issues? I’m getting scared cause he keeps losing weight. What can I do to help him eat more?

Ps. He had a full physical when he was brought in a few weeks ago, so I don’t think he’s having teeth problems.

        Thanks!

Did you tell your vet about his weight loss? It seems like she would be concerned about that. It could either be the medicine or the balance problem that is causing the decrease in his appetite. Sometimes a vet will give a B-12 shot to stimulate a rabbit’s appetite. He may need fluids if he isn’t eating or drinking enough. How much longer does he have to be on the medicine? Is he still making good droppings? If he has to continue with the medicine for a while longer and continues to lose weight, you may need to start giving him Critical Care. I think you should speak with your vet again and make sure she knows about his weight loss, and that you are concerned about him.
