I just had a quick question for those of you who might know more about this stuff that me. Are there diseases that can be transmitted from rabbits to poultry (like chickens and ducks) and vice versa? I am considering hatching chicks/ducklings this spring, and the only safe spot where the big dogs can’t get to them would be in my bedroom. Would this be a problem?

(And to clarify, I’m asking if it would be safe to house the ducklings/chicks in the same room as Moxie. They wouldn’t have any direct contact with Moxie, but I am worried more about airborn illnesses)

The only diseases I can think about off the top of my head that concern me are Salmonella and Pasteurella.

Thanks so much in advance guys!!

*temporarily housed. Until they are big enough to be housed outside.

Will have to look into that, Moxie. Bedtime here now but I’ll get on it tomorrow unless someone here knows of course.

Hatching chickens in your bedroom sounds alarmingly cute but I’ve never heard of anyone doing that

So you’re purchasing eggs to hatch via an incubator? There are a few things that can be transmitted from chickens to mammals, but I’m trying to remember if any of them are passed from mother to chick (i.e. vertical transmission). Some things are not, so chicks infected with said disease became so after they have hatched.

LBJ– We have multiple incubators, hatching ducklings used to be a hobby of mine, but I stopped once I got Moxie. If I hatched chicks, the eggs would come from my chickens. If I hatched ducklings I would be getting the eggs from a friend most likely

Ah, I see. I would think as long as your chickens are healthy, the risk would be relatively low. I was reading chicks can become infected with coccidia, etc. but they have to be exposed to it.

I’m jealous. I want a duck sooooooo bad. But can’t have one in the city. And can’t have it in my house because of all the pooing…. But they are soooo cute!
