Hello, everyone. (: I hope this reaches those of you out there who are willing to help me de-stress. I have been doing quite a bit of research on this site and others regarding bunnies after having my now cherished bunny, Carmella, given to me a few months ago. I am absolutely attached and love her to death, and she seems to have the same feelings towards me already. I spend my every day pampering her, giving her plenty of love and care, but unfortunately fleas don’t know any boundaries and have been terrorizing her for a while now. She’s infested with fleas, and it breaks my heart seeing her having to deal with them. All I want is for her to be happy, safe, and loved for as long as she is by my side. I have done my research and have concluded that the two most safe and effective flea treatments for buns are Advantage and Revolution. I have decided that I would be most likely to try Advantage because I do not have the funds for Revolution. However, upon my research, I have found that some people say even Advantage and Revolution are still dangerous. The only reason that I have not treated my beloved bun-bun is because I want to be sure that she won’t get sick or worse if I treat her with Advantage. I also would like to know a possibly safer solution, or if Advantage is only safe when used in a specific, sure dosage, and if so, what is this dosage? My bunny is less than ten pounds. I do not have a scale or else I would try to weigh her (carefully), nor do I have money to get her weighed at the vet at the moment. Please, if anybody has any helpful information, I beg of you to reach out. I’m tired of her suffering, and a mere flea comb just isn’t working to get them off of her anymore. Thank you so much in advance for reading and/or responding. Carmella and I appreciate it!!

There is a section here about fleas and advantage dosing.
          http://rabbit.org/faq-grooming/

I have heard of using diatomaceous earth on the animals coat before. My concern would be the powder getting in the eyes and animal ingesting some when they groom, although it is supposed to be safe to ingest.
It can be used to treat the carpet also.

The good thing about Advantage or Revolution though is they act as a preventative also. Revolution also treats more then just fleas.

Do you have other pets or does Carmella sometime go outside?

Many people have used the kitten formula of Revolution or Advantage on their rabbits, with no problems.

You will also need to keep any area she is in well vacuumed. Fleas are only on the host at certain times, at other times they are in the carpet or rugs or upholstery. They need to be gotten up, along with any eggs they have laid. You should take the vacuum outside to empty the bag or cup, since the fleas could jump out back into the house if you do it outside.

One other measure to help you control the fleas, and to monitor if you still have fleas, is a flea trap. You can buy them or make one yourself. This wouldn’t solve an infestation, but it could help along with using Revolution or Advantage and vacuuming. Here are the instructions to make one:

            How Flea Traps Work

Fleas are attracted to light. Positioning a light source over a container of water and dish soap or one lined with sticky paper entices the fleas to leap toward the light, whereupon they fall into the container and are trapped. Dish soap prevents the fleas from being able to stay on the surface of the water.

            Flea Trap Receptacles

Any wide, shallow receptacle such as a pie plate, wide-mouthed bowl or baking pan can serve as the base for your flea trap. Light colors are better, because they increase the trap’s attractiveness to light-hungry fleas. If you’re using sticky paper, line the bottom and inner sides. If you’re using water and dish soap, make sure your container won’t tip easily, and add an inch or two of water and a few drops of dish soap.

            Flea Trap Lighting

Position your light source directly above the trap, while making certain that it can’t fall in and create the danger of electrical shock or fire. Desk lights or clip lights can work well. You can also position your flea trap directly underneath a plug-in nightlight, or float a small tea light candle on the surface if you’re using water. For maximum effectiveness, the flea trap light should be the only light source in a dark room.

I’ve used Revolution on my bunnies and even on a rat and they were all fine. You can even ask the vet to measure out the exact dosage for your bunny’s weight. I’ve never heard of anyone having problems with Revolution on bunnies.

I have used Revolution on my buns and never had any issues. You can buy the puppy/kitten dose and then you don’t have to measure it out.
