My sweet little bunny, Bruce, is a mini lionhead lop mix.  basically the only parts that are very long are right by his neck, and while I brush him it looks like i completely missed a spot.  He has a matted piece of fur on his neck that seems to be twisting up into/ pulling on his skin.  I feel terrible for missing this and causing him any pain!  Please help me!  do I cut it? I am scared I may hurt him with his skin seeming to be pulled into it.

I have cut it down a bit but not enough to solve the problem.  In the future I will make sure to keep his pretty long hair cut down!  Thank you in advance for any advice!

You will need to keep carefully clipping at the matted fur, until you have gotten rid of it. As you go along, you can try to tease out the mat with a steel comb, or you could try using a brush. If you put your index and middle finger behind the mat, close to his skin, that will keep you from accidentally cutting him and from the mat pulling on his skin. Don’t feel bad about missing this mat. Rabbits with long fur are notorious for getting mats, and some can go unseen for a while. After you have gotten rid of the mat, daily brushing should keep more from forming.

You can also use a small pet trimmer (you can get them at Walmart in the dog section for like $10). Safer than using scissors. This is what I use for my Bindi’s mats.

As toby said you can try working it out with a comb and small slicker brush. If you are having to do a lot of brushing slide the comb under the mat to protect the skin. If you need to clip out the mat, slide the comb behind it and then carefully using small sharp scissors cut out the mat. The comb will protect your buns skin, their skin is super delicate and tears like tissue paper if you knick it. If you should accident knock the skin go to your vet ASAP and they will use a medical grade super glue to stop the knick from expanding
