I’ve posted several times about my bun pooping and now peeing on my sofa (leatherette upholstery). I cover it in towels which looks so tacky but i have to protect my brand new futon like basement sofa.

He doesn’t do it all the time. I THOUGHT it was when he was feeling neglected. Now I’m not sure. I brought him his Greens and let him out of his cage as i always do. Sat with him while he ate. And 15 minutes later he started pooping. Then while i was cleaning his cage, his litter box was on floor right in front of cage plus his litter box that is always outside his cage was available too. He left a pile of poops and peed on the sofa. By way he eats and poops in this 2nd litter box but doesn’t pee in it

This all started after we moved to a new house. Although in our old house he never was in an area where he had access to a bed or a sofa. For 2 weeks be lived in my bedroom with full freedom. I had my mattress on the floor while we waited for my new box springs to come. I loved it. He would run around, binky, and then chill with me on the bed. It was so fun. I put him up at night. But he was out all day and only a few stray poos. I was very busy putting the new house together AND my daughterot a standard poodle puppy 2 days after we moved. So Theo’s world changed dramatically. He used to get all of me and my daughters attention. Now he rarely sees my daughter and I’ve become very busy.

One night i was laying on bed talking to my sister on phone. I had been away from bun all day. This is when it all began. I thought he was playing as he was hopping all over the bed. I didn’t know it until i finally looked down and he had COVERED the bed in poo. No pee. The following week we had new floors installed. He got very upset. I had my new mattress set deliver after floors were done and he didn’t poo on it but peed all over it. I left him free in my room not expecting him to do that. Since then he wasn’t allowed in my room anymore. He was in a room temporarily with only a chair and desk. He never once peed or pooped on upholstered chair.

To give him more room i moved him and my office to basement. He has more room to play and run and he can be with me all day while i work. But the basement has a leatherette futon type sofa and he’s increasingly pooping and peeing on it!

Had there just been so much disruption in his life that he lost his litter box skills? He’s never been good with his poos but i chalked that up to his young age and was hoping he’d grow out of it. What is causing this behavior? I read marking beds and sofas is a common problem. But why did he start messing my bed after 2 weeks of not? And why did he never mess on my chair in his old room but is on the sofa in basement? He’s been in basement now for 2 months. HELP!! Any idea welcome and thanks fire reading this long post!!

It sounds like he is territory marking. Everything is so new, and new things keep getting introduced to his life day after day to him. This will likely continue for a few months, until he feels like he is “home” again. It would also benefit him if you spend more time with him. If he gets more attention, it might make him feel more “at home” and of course attention can only make him feel happier. If you cannot, once he settles down, it might be worth getting second bunny

Thanks Mikey. I am trying to spend as much time with him as possible. I think that will help too. I also have talked to breeder and I’m in line to get a new bun in spring. Thanks for confirming territory marking. I may also try fencing off basement so he has freedom but no access to sofa for a bit. I appreciate your input. Poor guy has had a LOT of change. I could not figure out where to put everything in the new house so there’s been a lot of moving stuff around including bun. And the renovations that upset him so much were not planned. On top of that a new predator in the house! He’s doing pretty well considering.
