        Hello all,

I just wanted to ask (title) as I am still having difficultly with nail trims. From past experience I know how dangerous formal sedatives can be when I almost lost Autumn in her spay op (her heart almost stopped) but I read somewhere that certain plants/ herbs can have a mild calming effect on rabbits and are occasionally used to lessen fights during bonding. Unfortunately I cant remember where I read this or what herbs were used. I don’t like the fact it’s come to this but everything I’ve tried, failed. she is well and truly bonded to me after over a year living side by side, having no reservations about dosing off on me mid pet while flopped next to me  but she will not tolerate any restraint, her eyes bulge, she cant be burrito’d, held, restrained with two hands, touch her feet and she seems on the verge of screaming when any of this is attempted. her nails are too long but nail trimming (often done badly) at the vets is too costly to do per month as needed here (£240 in nail trims alone per year!), not to mention the stress of travelling, smells, barking dogs and the unfamiliar vet/ environment (she can be restrained only at the vet due to sheer terror). I’m thinking something that may calm/ make her drowsy may allow me to preform much needed maintenance (teeth check as well). thanks for reading

In addition to herbs, what about trying rescue remedy for animals? That has a calming effect

Lavender is a great calmative. In essential oil form it can be diluted with a carrier oil, like grape seed. Then used in a roll from and dabbed onto the skin of the ears. Natural options will help take the edge off

You might find something on this site, AD.

It’s a shame she doesn’t tolerate nail trims well. So important to keep Rex nails short. Is there a rescue that offers nail trims or a local groomer that does has some rabbit experience you could take her too instead of the vet?

Chewie’s the same way… the vet is the only safe alternative I have since rescue remedy and herbs like chamomile, lavender, and even small doses of valerian do nothing in the face of his rage at being restrained by his hooman

LBJ10- Thanks for the reply, those sound interesting

Azerane- Thanks, completely slipped my mind, that is probably what I heard people using.

Jessica- Cool, Good to know as she loves her ears stroked so that would be easy to apply.

jerseygirl- Thanks for the uk links Exactly, every time she jumps off something it sets me on edge thinking she might bend or break a toe. Unfortunately there are no shelters where I live, in fact rabbit shelters are very rare at all in Wales, uk.

Q8bunny- That’s a shame, some are just too apprehensive. Hopefully this will calm with age.

Viennna Blue- Thanks for the info
