Chiggy (male rabbit) passed away last night. I was already hysterical so kept him in a box and away from wiggy. Now i realize i should have let her see him dead to understand that he is no more. Now they had kids. 4 of them who we r donating after they they start eating. And she is again preganant i think. Shoule i try to find a new companion for her in the kids only or should i get a new male and try to make bond. Also she was more attached to us than chiggy but after him gone she seems to be looking everywhere. What to do. Urgent

You should wait a month and then get your female spayed before you bring any more bunnies into your household…

How had she managed to get pregnant again? Did you not separate her from Chiggy?

I agree with Mikey, you need to get your female spayed before even thinking about bringing another bun home.

We had separated them and kept them in diff rooms as we rarely cage them. He snucked out once or twice. Right now we will be spaying wiggy but a week after she gives birth. The question is diff though. We are not looking to find a mate for her. A companion will be better word and we prefer another female bunny. Now she is already visibly upset after he is gone. We are thinking to keep two kits which will keep her company. Otheriwse chiggy already gone and if babies leave too i think she will be completely heart broken. She is just7 months old. Will it be better to get another bunny from petstore or keep the kits? Will she accept the kits as her companion or will she will neglect them as companions being their mother?

I don’t think that you will be able to spay Wiggy a week after she gives birth. She will be nursing then. You would have to wait until the new litter is weaned for her to have the surgery.

One or more of her babies could certainly be her companion(s). Besides getting her spayed, you will have to get any future companion neutered or spayed. Then after a few weeks recuperation and time for the hormones to settle down, you can start the permanent bonding. It is easier to bond a neutered male with a spayed female, but you can bond same sex rabbits too. Any rabbits that you put together have to be spayed and neutered first. It only takes a few seconds of mating for a pregnancy to occur.  You have to make sure that any rabbits who are old enough to reproduce are kept completely separate.  They have even been known to mate through cage bars.

Any babies that you have will need to be separated before they reach 12 weeks of age. You could either end up with more litters if they are kept together or you could end up with injured bunnies if they start fighting when they reach puberty and their hormones come flooding in.

Thanks. I visited my vet about neutering. He told me his balls will be removed. Since now he is no more and i still dont know about sex of the kits i will be keeping, i wanted to ask if male rabbits have proper sex life after neutering? As far as i know their balls hold the hormones for sexual drive or is it only applicable for humans. Again thanks

I agree with everyone above that one of the babies would absolutely be a good companion for her. Instead of (or in addition to) neutering one of the kits, the easiest thing to do would be to spay her so 1) no matter what the sex of the kit is, she won’t get pregnant, and 2) it’ll prevent the ever-so-prevalent uterine cancer found in bunnies.

What do you mean ‘proper sex life’ for a rabbit?

I am not sure but isnt sex driving harmones r in testicles? She just peed blood in urine. I am pretty sure as i saw a sprut of blood along with urine. Taking to vet tomo again. Actually these r Indian bunnies and not made for cold. Right now its really cold in delhi and we are having hard time making them stay at warms places. We are keeping kits and wiggy in a small cage with blankets all around. Any idea how to train to stay on blanket. We tried making clothes for them but they tore it off. Chiggy had died of hypothermia only. So cold is a big concern now.
