My new bunny is sitting on the edge of her litter box and peeing outside of it. I have potty pads underneath, which aren’t always in place so the accidents are getting on my floor. She is pooping in it though. Has anyone ever tried a litter box hood or cover, and do your rabbits still go in it to use it? I’m out of ideas to prevent her from peeing on the floor. I even moved the hay around inside the litter box and she still wants to prop her butt on the edge.

We got one of those covered triangular cat litter boxes for a while, and used it successfully until the cheap plastic it was made from broke. I could tell Silas didn’t care for it much, but it might solve your problem. How big is your litter box? I ask because after that one broke, we just got a cheap rectangular cat litter box and it worked fine, since the sides are much taller than the “rabbit” litter boxes or other containers we had tried. Of course, it may have been neutering that solved our problem too.

I did get the biggest one I could find and bigger than the first I tried with her and she does the same thing. She has been Spaid for over 6 months now. I’m just afraid if I put a cover on it she may not use it? I am going to pet smart to see what the they have today. She props her butt in the same corner too. She is silly. Maybe she needs a real toilet!

AKM – ha ha, I’ve seen videos of cat using a human toilet – and I’ve heard it’s quite easy to train them….

Anyhoo, how about getting a storage box or something that quite simply has sides too high for her to perch her bum over the side… maybe 10inches high…
She’ll jump into it, don’t you worry.
There are puppy litter trays too which are higher at the back I think.

              Let us know the outcome

That’s true, I could put it inside of a big box if a cover doesn’t work. I will let you know if I can find a lid or cover at the store. That would be easiest to clean and then wouldn’t have to worry about her shredding the potty pads!

Evidently, bunnies can use a real toilet. I just saw this a few days ago:

                  http://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?p=rabbit+using+a+commode&fr=yhs-invalid#action=view&id=1&vid=ea3fbf8f2b4078eff5ec511a3158e57a

My female New Zealand kept peeing over the side of the litter box, so I got her one that has high sides and a high back. I think that I got it online at Petco. They didn’t have the right size in the store. You could also try putting a thick towel under the litter box, but you would have to keep changing it and washing it, plus she might chew on it.

The litter box I got was this one, or something similar.  It’s been a few years, and I’m not sure it’s exactly the same one.

That is too awesome. However, then we wouldn’t have the rabbit droppings for the compost, plus can you imagine having a hay rack next to your toilet? Too funny.

This is the litter box we had: http://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/moderna-flip-top-corner-enclosed-cat-litter-box

Not that I’m completely endorsing it since it broke easily, but it did work. There are lots of other covered ones available that might also. We took off the entrance flap because Silas didn’t like it.

I think…problem solved! Bought a very high sided litter box, with a low opening in the front. High enough for a cover, but the top is open. So far pumpkin has gone potty inside the litter box bc she can’t stick her little bottom on the side. Yay! Keeping my fingers crossed though she continues to use it. She likes to dig, so no issues with the litter coming out either.

And yes having a hay-rack in the bathroom would be a messy challenge. Ha!

That’s good! It sounds like she has taken to the new litter box and hopefully she will keep using it.
