Lilo has been around 4.5 pounds his whole life. I never thought much of how his bones feel. But I can feel his pelvis, it doesn’t feel super sharp or anything. But I can feel it and all of his ribs. He has been to the vet 6 times in the last 5.5 years but they have never commented on if his weight is good. Can you feel your rabbit pelvis ribs and spine? How to tell between too skinny and too fat?

For reference, I feed him 2 tbsp of pellets a day and 2 oxbow supplement tablets (approximately another 0.5 tbsp of pellets), he’s getting about a cup of veggies now bc he got gas a couple weeks ago so I cut back his veggies, and unlimited oat hay.

As you mentioned, you should be able to feel the bones, but they shouldn’t feel sharp or prominent. If you can’t feel bones at all your bunny is overweight. I’m not by them to try to feel their ribs, but I know I can feel the spine and hips of both of my bunnies but they’re not sharp, they’re rounded and softened. If he’s been that weight for a long time and your vets have never commented that he may be underweight, I’d say he’s a healthy weight

As Azerane commented, it’s most likely your bunny is fine! What I recommend doing though is weighing your bunny once per week. I do this just to make sure my bun buns healthy. If she weighs a lot more or a lot less from one week to another, then I know that something’s not right. Weighing your bunny weekly also helps make sure she or he is at the correct weight. What might also help is knowing what’s the average weight for the breed your bunny is. ?

I have had no luck trying to weigh him. He loves cuddles. Hates slippery surfaces and being restricted to the scale. Maybe one day I’ll try when he’s napping. Thanks for all the answers, glad he seems normal enough comparing to other rabbits!

The way I weigh my bunny is I hold my bunny in my arms then weigh us both. Then I weigh myself. Then I subtract my weight from the weight of both of us. It’s not exact, by it gives me an idea of how much she weighs… ?

You can also weigh them in a bowl, that’s what I do. If I was to put them on the surface of the scale, they would definitely just run away. I put a bowl on the scale with a blanket it it, zero the weight and then add one bunny. They usually sit there long enough to get a reading before they get fidgety

I shall try the food scale and bowl method. Maybe he’ll stay still instead of try to chew everything on the counter.
