I probably won’t be around now that my house is bun-less (it’s a lot creepier now when I hear a random crash at night and can’t just blame a bunny falling off their tower) but I got my ornament just in time for Christmas and wanted to share in case anyone else is into it.

I never planned to do this, never planned to cremate them, but Finn, who went first, collapsed literally as we were walking out the door for ten days in Mexico. My choices were to double back and bury him before leaving, let the vet dispose of him, or cremate him. I had to do right by him after he suffered. And then in true caudex style, his ashes moved around the house for a year and I kept forgetting to put them under the hydrangea tree in the yard as planned. (Fear not, he would have been thrilled with this arrangement. )

Then Sophie was next, and obviously I could not do one and not the other, especially since I have dogs and burying them wasn’t a good option. Same plan, under a tree with Finn would have been her only wish.

Then my Liam so close behind her…I loved them all in a special way, Finn was hilarious, Sophie sassy, Liam so gentle and affectionate. He was rescued as a stray, and didn’t love being outside like the others. 10 minutes in the sun was fine, but more scared him. The thought of leaving him outside in the weather turned my stomach. I never expected to have to plan for all of them at the same time. I looked for other options.

I guess many places do something like this, but I used Spirit Pieces on Etsy. They sent me a kit which I returned with a quarter teaspoon of ash, a tiny bit from each. This is incorporated into a very heavy solid glass orb, to hang in the garden or a (super strong or fake) Christmas tree. They do other shapes too. I feel okay with putting the rest outside now.

Some might find this creepy, but in my mind it is a pretty representation of EXACTLY what they all would want:

Liam, solid and sturdy and near us forever.

Finn, way up high where he can survey his kingdom.

Sophie, briefly the sparkling center of attention and the rest of the time comfy in a tote in the closet

And the three of them together for always.

Oh my gosh. That is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen anyone do for their pets. I’m so sorry for your losses but also so happy that you were able to have all those memories with them.

That’s a really lovely idea. didn’t know that was done.

Whatever form a symbol of love comes in (it could be somewhere visited or even a view), it’s a beautiful thing.
