I don’t know much about rabbit behavior, but I recent got a rabbit at 8 weeks old. She is very loving and craves attention.

About a few months later, she is suddenly acting very strange. Her habits are now constantly following me, honking and running around in circles around me where ever I go and excessive kissing when I put my head close to hers. I don’t mind it personally, but I heard rabbits want something when their making honking noises.

Not sure what it is though. She has lots of toys, fresh hay, her greens and water. I can’t understand what shes trying to tell me now and is sometimes, but rarely aggressive. She will also grunt then thump when I stop petting her, which tells me shes wants to be pet more as she keeps putting her head under my hand.

Any advice on female rabbit behavior would be great! this attitude has been non-stop since she started it.

Following, circling, honking are all vital parts of bunny courtship. Your bunny has hit bunny puberty. It’s of course perfectly normal. Rabbits tend to become sexually obsessed when puberty hits – in nature, rabbits have short lives (almost all bigger animals want to eat them), and it’s extremely important for the survival of the species that they get many babies asap.

The grunting and thumping when you stop petting her is not puberty though, it’s just how bunnies are when you stop petting them before they have granted you permission. Some buns will even nip you if you stop petting them too soon (too soon for the bunny’s liking, that is).

Your bunny can now be spayed, and that will stop her pursuing you + other sexually motivated behaviors. It’s advisable to get girl bunnies spayed, because they have a very high risk of uterine cancer at age 3-4. So it’s the best thing you can do for your bunny’s health.

            Welcome to the forum!

Puberty is kicking in. This is hormonal behaviour, and it will stop as soon as your rabbit is neutered or spayed. It’s adviced to spay or neuter a rabbit anyway, because intact rabbits are more susceptible to diseases or behaviour problems. Intact females have a high chance of cancer in their lady bits after the age of 4, and intact males can start to spray urine everywhere and become agressive.

Best contact a rabbit savvy vet in your area for the operation. Not every vet has experience with rabbits, so call around a bit to find the right one.

Thank you for the help, I will wait a little longer before her spay to ensure her safety.

In response to bam, are you saying that she wants to have babies with me? If that’s the case, then that’s rather odd. Can she not tell that I’m a human? There aren’t any other rabbits around where I am so id say that’s the reason for constantly circling and honking at me.

TMT, she can tell you’re a human, but hormones can’t be argued with. My male bunny Bam developped a crush on my German Shepherd dog. He’d pursue her, circle her, nip her shoulders and not let her alone one waking minute. She was of course not at all amused, and it was stressing him out – he didn’t get any rest. I tried to separate them, Bam went berzerk and gnawed frantically at the baby gate between them. He tried to jump it and throw himself at it just to get out and be with his loved one. Plus he’d started to pee and poop mark her favorite resting-spots. So I decided to have Bam neutered, and that was the end of the “affair”.

I think Bam knew she wasn’t a rabbit – they’d shared the same apt for a year – but hormones won’t listen to reason.

Indeed, my bunny Breintje made avances to anything roughly the right size which didn’t run away. He ruined many balls of knitting wool and some crafts projects. Yuck!

lol……. When I had my little Velvet, before her spay, she would “get friendly” with anything she could find. Stuffed animals, clothes and her favorite thing of all, my husband’s furry black monster slippers.
