I’m pretty sure my husband is allergic to our lionhead rabbits Timothy hay. I was told this is the only hay she can have. I wasn’t sure if anyone knew any alternatives. Because I really don’t want to get rid of her thanks !!

As far as I know, bunnies can have any type of grass hay in their diet. Timothy, Orchard, Meadow, etc.
I’ve heard of some people who were allergic to Timothy, but not to Orchard, maybe you can try that type of hay out!

My bun is a lionhead and prefers Orchard over Timothy, so that’s what he gets (:

So, you can try different kinds of hay and hopefully find one your husband isn’t allergic to!

Ella is correct. Lionheads can have any type of hay. If she is an adult, it should be one of the grass hays. Orchard grass is less likely to cause allergies than timothy. Besides different varieties, you might try different brands. Some hay is dustier than others.

Timothy hay is frequently mentioned as being THE hay to feed rabbits, but it really doesn’t matter as long as you feed a grass hay. Timothy just happens to be one of the most common grass hays in the US and Europe. Except for expensive imported bags, we can’t even get timothy hay in Australia, because it’s not suited to the climate.

Many people are allergic to timothy hay. I am, it makes me cough all through the night. So I feed oat hay and orchard. Oat is Bam’s favorite anyway, so he doesn’t mind. As the others have said, all the grass hays are good for buns. Legume hay (alfalfa, clover) should only be fed to buns under the age of 5 months, it’s too rich in protein and calcium for adults.

It’s good to start a bun early on grass hay though. If they establish a good grass hay eating habit when they’re young, they’ll keep eating hay as adults, and hay is key to bunny gut- and teeth health.

I’ve heard quite a few people with allergies notice some relief when feeding Orchard Grass. My buns always eat Oxbow Orchard Grass. They much prefer it to Timothy and it’s just as healthy.
