Hi everyone. A good friend recently adopted a rabbit from a family who could no longer keep her. She’s a beautiful black lop but I don’t think the family knew how to properly care for or groom a rabbit. Her nails are the longest I’ve ever seen and a couple on her back feet are actually starting to curl awkwardly to one side. She will be taking her in for a check-up next week but I was hoping you would have some advise on how to manage this nail problem? I suggested trimming the tips once a week to get the quick to pull back but wasn’t sure if this was the best plan or not since I haven’t had this problem with my Olaf.

Any ideas? If trimming the tips, how often?

I would tell your friend to have the vet do the initial trimming when she takes her bun to the check up since you mention that some of the nails are curling awkwardly. After that, trimming the tips to get the quick to pull back is definitely a good suggestion. Luna’s nails tend to grow a little fast, so I do a trim once every 2 weeks. Being that your friend’s bun is a black lop, she might have a hard time being able to see the quick through the nail. When I trim Luna’s nails, I have someone hold a flashlight and shine it towards the side of the nail to make the quick visible.

Thank you, smart idea. You’re right to have the vet take a look, too. I only hope she doesn’t have any foot or hock problems from this issue. I’ll definitely suggest she use a flashlight. I’m sure it will be a tedious progression but it’s better than getting the quick. Otherwise, she appears to be healthy so I hope this is her only major issue. I’m happy she is in a better home. Thanks again.
