I have a lion head domestic adult male named Leon, he’s very lovey most the time, but just recently he has started acting strange. I got him a new hay feeder for Christmas and I refilled his water with good store bought stuff and he loved both he drank half the water and immediately started using his new Hay feeder but just a few hours later he started doing something he’s never done, he started digging at his a corner of his cage until there was nothing left but the plastic and then continued to scratch at it for a really long time, this seemed very strange to me so I watched him do it for a bit but I couldn’t see any reasoning behind it all. He ended up stopping for a good few hours then would gradually do it here and there until bed time, but around 3 am he was back at it again and this time with a passion, he has never done this before and I am concerned about it because he’s leaving scratch marks on his cage and he’s only focused on a certain corner. He’s eating just fine and he poops normal so is this a sign of anything or is he just angry at his cage or something else?

Do you let him out alot? My rabbit use to digs in corners of her plastic bottom cage all the time then I started letting her out her out for even longer and it slowly subsided. Maybe you’re not giving enough attention? because my rabbit will do anything by means digging, tugging on her hay ball feeder and not even eating the hay, running so fast in her cage and knocking her body against the plastic sides making loud noise until I wake up to give her food. Hope this helps
If you’re still really concerned you shouldn’t hesitate to talk to a vet because smaller things can lead to bigger issues.

The first questions we’ll need answers to are: How old is he? Is he neutered?

If he’s a young un-neutered male, he could be experiencing hormonal frustration.

I might be over – simplifying things but did he have a hay feeder before? I’m thinking if he was perhaps able to dig into his hay before and now he can’t so he’s digging at his cage?
