I found my bun on Christmas with a very pussy, dry, and popped out eye, which was not the case the night before. I noticed that she had not eaten the apple I had given her the night before, and did some research to find that the eye infection may be caused from a tooth infection. I took her to the vet today to receive some bad news. Poor Moose may be blind in this eye and the infection is very serious. The vet mentioned I could hospitalize her with 40% chance of survivaliving or euthanize, because if I took her home she would not survive the infection. She is still eating and somewhat active, but can only eat soft veggies. She is pooping some, but is VERY light compared to her normal weight. She has been losing weight quickly, but still loves to eat. She’s a mini lionlop, 3 years old, and the sweetest thing. Anyone have any insight on hospitalization? I’m taking her first thing tomorrow morning

Is she losing weight due to eating less, or does the weight loss seem random? Poor little bunny (((((healing vibes)))))

I’m sorry to hear that your bunny is so ill. Sometimes a bun needs hospitalization, I’ve not had to have a bunny hospitalized myself, but several of our members have.

Sometimes an eye had to be taken out if the infection is very severe. Rabbits cope very well with only one eye. If the problem is a tooth-abscess, that of course has to be dealt with too.

I hope your bun will make it.

I have had my bunny Chicho hospitalized. My advice is you should look at where they keep her (the size of the area), its proximity to other animals as rabbits get very stressed out. Bring her favorite fleece and litter box if it would fit (things that have familiar scents). Bring her favorite toys. Bring any treats you have that she likes (whether or not she’s allowed to eat them is up to the vet). I would try to visit as often as I can because it really helps them to see a familiar face. Best wishes to you and the bunny! Hope she recovers soon!!

Our Daisy went though an eye infection that wouldn’t heal initially, a week long hospitalization, finally some slow progress and she could come home. She suddenly developed an abscess behind the eye and it was removed. It’s been about 6 weeks, aside from a final small scab Daisy is completely recovered and has adjusted well to the life of a Pirate Bunny. She’s such a temperamental diva we weren’t sure how she’d do emotionally after the traumas she endured with endless vet trips, stays, the surgery, and losing an eye… but she came around, forgave us eventually and is back to being the family’s monarch.

If there is some hope of maintaining or restoring quality of life and you can afford, don’t hesitate to try to help with hospitalization and/or enucleation if necessary.
