so I spent ages doing up a wooden hutch – lino the floors , silicone , pine headed the edges , brought a run and made a base for it- now I can’t use it!!!

the two with hay fever in my house cannot take it anymore after 5 days!!!!

so Oakley is in a plastic cage during the day and big playpen in the evenings for 5-6 hours

I hate the plastic cage after the wooden one but no choice

so here’s his current one (as of an hour ago)

I want to get a new one , I’d like one off the ground since I have 4 kids that play down there and he is in the lounge so don’t want him scared
But I want a good frame on it (not just two plastic clips holding the base on as that seems too flimsy to me ?)
          Any recommmendations from your experiences?
His one in the photo is 60cm high and 100cm long so needs to be at least that – I would prefer 120cm long

I’m afraid I don’t have any recommendations for a plastic cage, however I am confused as to why you have to change to a plastic cage from a wooden one because of hay fever. The hay will still be there, no matter which cage you have.

              I use a 40 L x 17.5 W x 21 H cage.

It’s large for small bunnies like my dwarf

How high off the ground would you want the cage to be?

It doesn’t have to be too far just enough he doesn’t feel threatened … and so Lego can’t flip in easily lol!

The firwood construction was making my other half and my sons eyes itch and sneeze etc like they do with their hay fever but worse ! Tried removing the hutch since other half was convinced it was that and now they nowhere near as irritated with the hay amount hay they still have some but not as bad

Emmsy that’s same size as mine now , I guess it would be fine since he gets evenings out of cage but I would like it to be a wee big bigger

You can look into C&C cages. You can build the cage higher up off of the ground, then put little storage boxes in cubbies under it. You buy the cage size you want, then the cubbies and amount of grids you will need to slide underneath. http://www.guineapigcagesstore.com/

Big dog cage (would be a chateau for Oakley!) and put lots of shelves (wooden planks supported by horizontal wooden rods put through the bars) and you could have xpen attached to it….

Only issue with dog crate is Oakley being so young isn’t litter training easily and I need the deep tray to prevent it getting on carpet… urine guards aren’t available here and to buy them on Amazon they have heaps put on for shipping them ( its stupid because so items like lounging logs the shipping is only $13 ish USD to nz , and some cages are $60 USD shipping amount – yet some smaller things like guards are or litter trays have almost $50 Usd just for the shipping!! )

I have figured out the problem with the wooden hutch is since it’s made for outside whatever they treated the outside of it with is too potent inside – I moved it to the garage about 8 ish hours ago and the allergies are no where near as bad and Oakley’s nose discharge I posted about yesterday is almost completely gone!!!!
Went into the garage to get the washing and the smell in that closed off area from having the hutch in it is so potent !!!

That sounds very worrying about what they treated it with !!!! . Not sure its got anything to do with ‘hayfever’ just a normal human’s reaction to a chemical product !!!! It is good its been moved! For you, your family and oakley !!!

Re the dog cage, i have put cheap wooden slats (upright) about 4inches wide around the bottom of the cage (i put them inside and dont mind if they get chewed, but ive seen some put them on the outside). This stops the poops from being ball bearings and flying across the room
The litter tray is inside which the wee goes in. they never poop or pee up on the shelves (i stuck a bit of carpet tiles on the shelves for grip)

This is the Holiday setup they have at their grandparents’ hotel !

Oh that’s pretty cool! So the wood has to be untreated, Won’t it smell from urine??
