Hi all! I hope you had a super festive season! This is just a question for pure interest’s sake. I got my bunny from a lady in the country side who has “free range bunnies” – they are in a large area in her yard, and roam freely indoors and outdoors, and are allowed to breed as they please, and thus my rabbit is very much a mixture of breeds.
I was just wondering how one would describe rabbit appearances? I know some coats are specific to breeds, and some breeds have specific coat colours.
How would you describe my buns coat? I find people asking, and I’m unsure how to describe her! Do mixed breed rabbits often have litters of all different colours?
Love, a South African Bunny Hugger!

It’s hard to tell from the small profile pic… could you post a bigger picture?

Hey there With such a possible combination of breeds in the mix, it will be almost impossible to tell what your bun is. Mixing breeds can result in rabbits that looks like no breed, or a rabbit that even looks like a different breed. Even the rabbits she started with may have been mixed. Your bun is gorgeous regardless, she looks mid-sized, do you know her weight?

Her colour is called agouti, it is not specific to any breed. Colour genetics are a bit beyond me but it’s more than just what colour the parents are, it also has to do with what’s in their lineage and genetics.

Rabbit genetics area very confusing – two blue parents will not make only blue babies for instance
In holland lops ONE difference in gene changes the entire colour
My boys parents are beige and chinchilla – yet the kits were cream, blue , beige and fawn colours – it’s not just about their dominant gene ( what comes through on that bunny – colour , size etc that you visibly see) but what there recessive genes are too ( recessive genes they can pass on to their offspring but don’t show on themselves )

You have a agouti beauty of unknown origin

I have no good answers for you but I think agouti is a dominant color. It is in dogs. Dominant means one or both parents were an agouti bun. Please correct me, dear BBers if I’m wrong!

                She is very beautiful.

She’s beautiful! Yes, definitely agouti coloring. Since it sounds like such a mixed gene pool, it’s hard to tell just by appearances what she is. You said you’re from South Africa, correct? Maybe see if you can find out what breeds are popular there. Just a quick google search that I did seems to indicate that traditionally “meat” breeds are popular, like New Zealand Silver Fox, and Californian. There also seem to be a lot of Nethie, Angora, and Jersey Wooly breeders. That might help you narrow things down. She’s obviously not a dwarf or wool breed, for example.

Bam, yes, Agouti (A) is dominant. It’s a pattern gene, not a color gene. Rabbit color/pattern genetics are very complicated, but being agouti pattern means at least one parent had an A. But the parent may not have had the traditional chestnut agouti appearance because it is a pattern gene that can combine other genes to give different appearances.

Here’s more info about the gene than you’d probably ever want. LOL

                        Hi all!
This is a very late reply, I haven’t been on BB in ages and didn’t have email notifications enabled – double oops!

Interestingly enough she was advertised as a dwarf bunny, because the momma was a dwarf, but about a month into having her it was very clear she was not a dwarf! I researched agouti, and from what I’ve seen it’s exactly the same patterning as my Pooks, right down to her little white chin.

Mari and Lilo – I apologize for the small picture, I’m on mobile and not particularly technological!

Azerane – she weighs 2.1kg, so she’s quite a little fatty!

Anyways, I just wanted to thank all you lovely people for your responses and apologize for my lack of feedback!

                        Happy bunny hugs!
