Hi all, I was just wondering how long did it take to litter train your bunnies? I recently just got 2 lionheads and for the most part they poop in their litter boxes but they still drop and pee a bit around the cage. I’m not sure if it is something that I am doing wrong that they’re not getting used to the litter box. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

Are they spayed and/or neutered? It can be difficult to fully litter box train a rabbit that isn’t spayed or neutered. Do you only have litter in the litter boxes? If you have litter or bedding in the whole cage, that is confusing to them. It can be normal to find a few stray poops where a rabbit has been, but you do want them to use the litter box when they pee. Some people will put hay in the litter box or in a rack over the litter box to entice the rabbits to use the box.

They’re still too young to be spayed yet and I have done everything said and they are using the litter box, but there is still ALOT of droppings around the cage as well.

My bunnies trained themselves to pee exclusively in their litter trays as soon as I stopped using bedding all over their hutch. I used straw all over when I got them at 8 weeks old and stopped using it all over a couple of weeks later. The peeing everywhere stopped immediately. It was literally instant. As for poop, well it took weeks of picking up poo and putting it in their litter boxes and eventually the amount of poop outside the trays got fewer. Maybe 70ish% of all poops were in the trays. Then I got them neutered and spayed (they’re 4 and a half months old now) and they are pooping almost 100% in their trays now   I would say some days there are no stray poops but sometimes there is a few. Almost perfect lol.

Depending on their age they may get better as they get a bit older. My girl has been very good about always peeing in her litter box, she only had accidents the first couple days and the day of her spay (she was forgetting to turn around in her litter box) but I’ve never given her bedding in her cage, only a blanket and that was after she was showing good potty habits. We still get stray poos in the cage but I’d say 98% are in her pan and she very rarely ever drops one when she has free run. When she was younger about 20% of her poos we not in the pan. She is also 4.5 months just like Sarah’s pair

The way I litter boxed trained my bunny was I simply laid the litter box in the cage first thing when I got her, and put some of her poop in there. It took like about a month for her to get fully litter box trained. But of course, every bunny will have little accidents once in a while!

So since your rabbit can’t be spayed at this moment, you can do what I did. And every time your bunny poops out of the litter box place it in there again! This is very important you do!!!

Thanks for all the replies! I guess I will just have to wait for a while and hopefully they will get used to it soon.
