Our bunnies have a 1/2 cup of pellets in the morning and a big bunch of veggies in the evening, along with unlimited hay all day. I’m leaving to go home for the holidays and had planned on using a pet sitter to clean the bunnies’ litter box, refill their hay and water and give them their veggies. The sitter is great and I really trust her. For the pellets I was planning on using an automatic feeder to dispense the food in the morning. Unfortunately the rabbits are so scared of it I think they’d rather starve than go anywhere near it. I’ve been trying every morning since Sunday to get them used to it and feel less scared but they will not eat out of it. Summer is getting a bit less wary but Ollie is no where near trusting it, and I leave tomorrow so I’ve run out of time to get them acclimatized.
So there goes that plan! Will they be okay without their morning pellets? Would it be better to just not feed them the pellets or just have the sitter leave their breakfast out when she leaves so they at least get the calories/nutrients? If she does this I’m worried our piggy Summer will eat them all over the course of the night and leave none for Ollie. He fights for his share in the morning but might be too full after dinner!
I’m all worried now that I’m changing their food schedule and I won’t be here to make sure they don’t have tummy trouble. Ollie was prone to stasis at his old home but hasn’t had any problems in the three weeks we’ve had him. The woman who ran the rescue was really sure moving was gonna prompt a bout of stasis but he was more than happy! He has a larger space and runs around a lot so she thinks this really aids his digestion and could be why he’s doing so much better.
Is this too big of a change? Obviously I know no guarantees but do you think this will affect Ollie’s stomach?

Hi and welcome. I’m sorry I can’t advise you on bunnies and piggies eating together whilst you’re not there but someone else here will be able to
3 weeks isn’t long to know his food habits….

I went away for four days last month and a friend, a very trusted friend, could only come once a day but I made sure that she was very informed about what to look for : food being eaten, poops being pooped and wee is being weed.
If ANY of these three things seemed strange to her she was to call me or the vets immediately. I absolutely insisted on this.

I think she was silently scared stiff. !!!! LOL…..
All went fine and I came home to 2 beautifully silky bunnies, so much stroking and cuddles had they had

But regarding your piggy having access to the pellets, i really couldnt say…..

Vienna, her piggy is her greedy rabbit, Summer

I’m not sure what to suggest. They will manage without pellets, I have in the past read some things that advise to feed pellets and greens at different times of the day, but I’m not sure how unsuitable it is or if there’s any real danger behind it. I think perhaps the greens and pellets may digest at different rates?

Whenever I go away, I have mine checked on twice per day, partly because of their schedule, but it also stresses me out far too much to have them left alone for 24 hours, knowing how quickly stasis can set in.

Ohhhhhhh…… the piggy is a bunny or is it the bunny is a piggy????LOLLOL
yes I’m lucky my two don’t have any digestion problems and so I don’t worry when I leave them. maybe I should…. and also mine get salads and pellets at the same time. Oh dear I’m doing everything wrong. touch wood all is okay.
Ollie and Summers family…. do what your heart and gut tell you and have a nice time but DO insist to your bunny sitter to not hesitate if she has any doubt whatsoever
