In a somewhat unexpected and crazy turn of events, we seem to have added to the fur family-with our smallest member yet!
Last night I received a text from a coworker asking if I would be willing to take in one of the two mice they had bought as a gift for their children, as they didn’t get along. We picked him up today, and he has gone from living in a plastic tackle box to a 40 gallon tank. Meet….

        Caspian the mouse!

I’ve never had a mouse before, but he is adorable and I am looking forward to learning about mouse care. (:

On that note, he’s a smelly little fellow. Is this just marking in a new home? Any suggestions on how to safely absorb or mask the smell?

          He IS adorable, LEL!

I have no idea how to reduce smell, though.

He is so cute! How exciting to add a new family member Male mice shouldn’t be kept together so it’s not surprising they didn’t get along.

In terms of smell, I don’t think there’s a terrible amount you can do about it. From what I’ve read, he may smell more at first while marking his territory, and I have read that if when you change the bedding, to keep a little bit of it and sprinkle it over so that he doesn’t feel the need to re mark everything. However I think male mice smelling is just a fact of life I’m afraid

I’m not into domestic mice, but I really want to keep native Spinifex Hopping Mice one day. I find them fascinating.

              Aww, how adorable!!

We saved some baby wild/house mice once (maybe like 3 years ago now?). Somebody gave us an old tractor and their was a nest in the engine. Once they were big enough, we released them. It was a fun experience, even though we never touched them (bacteria and we didn’t want them to get used to humans touch) Mice are fun to watch.

We had a pet gerbil once as well, and we had to sprinkle old bedding on top once we changed the bedding to prevent excessive marking. It’s worth a try.

Awww hes adorable! I’ve never had mice, but I’ve had rats before (4 females) and boy do their poo and pee STINK! Idk about mice but rats have respiratory disease and essentially 100% of all rats besides lab rats are born with the bacteria that causes the disease (Mycoplasma pulmonis) so a wired cage is ideal b/c it’s more ventilated than an aquarium.

Yeah, mice are stinky. I had to clean the feeder tanks at school. I like the idea of keeping a bit of old litter so things don’t smell too clean to him after you clean.

Caspian is adorable, LEL. The cage idea (more ventilation) popped into my mind too, but I know nothing about mouse care
Either way, he’s a lucky little fellow to become one of your furbabies

I think providing tanks have a lid that is well ventilated and not solid then they are ok. Obviously wire cages offer the best ventilation, but they also have their own issues. Tanks are ultimately safer and more appropriate.

Aww….cute!!! I just love little rodents. I miss having one around since my little Sniffles passed away.

I never had a mouse (just hamsters and a rat) but I had a friend who had one and they def have a musky odour. Maybe you could find a pet mouse group on FB and ask for suggestions.

What a little cutie!! With all of the mice that I’ve had, I always used a newspaper liner in their cage and sprinkled baking soda underneath it. It helped immensely with absorbing that icky “musty” smell. Provided that he doesn’t try burrowing under the newspaper it might be worth a try.

As Kaylyne said, you can use a bit of baking soda underneath news paper if hes not much of a burrower or digger 3 out of 5 of mine have all loved to burrow and hide, so they had to stay stinky. Changing the litter once in the morning and once at night helped out the smell in the house, atleast. We always left about half of the litter in there to avoid over marking. Candles, fans, and air purifiers nearby are also helpful
