Hello everyone! I have lots of small maple trees that I’d like to use to make wooden toys for my rabbit Cooper. I see maple is on the ‘safe woods’ list but am wondering if anyone has had any success giving it to their rabbit and if it needs to be dried first. Any information is appreciated! Thanks!

The only thing I know about maple is that one particular type can kill horses. Horses and rabbits have similar digestive systems, they are hind-gut fermenters. Here’s an article I found:

In Europe there’s another type of maple that causes poisoning in horses. I found an article that says it’s mostly about the seeds, but I have read elsewhere that young seedlings also can cause poisoning.

Again, only horses seem to be affected, but that could be because sheep and cows are ruminators and domesticated rabbits are not let out on pasture.
I’m just saying this as a warning, because it’d be so sad if if you made sth for your bun that ended up being bad for him.
