So thumper was really super sweet and would come in our laps and lay with us to pet her before her spay. her spay was last Tuesday and now she runs away from us and won’t let us pet her and not as friendly as she used to be ,she’s also nipping at us. is this normal is it because shes still uncomfortable from her spay. Is she angry with us? is she hormonal? I just feel like all that bonding went out the window? My kids are bummed. I try to explain to them that maybe she still uncomfortable from her surgery. Any advice?

I’ve read that after spaying or neutering, they can experience a bit of a hormone surge which can result in less than welcome behaviour and loss of litter habits. I believe it can take upto 6 months for the hormones in a female to completely settle.

It’s very common for a newly desexed bun to go through a period of “weird” behavior. It does subside and your bonding has not gone out the window. Give it a few weeks at least. Try to explain to the children that she isn’t quite herself right now, but that she can’t really help it and it’s not that she dislikes her human family.
Grumpiness, aloofness, territorial aggression, food aggression, pee-and poop-marking, skittishness, increased sexual awareness – all those things can become enhanced after a spay. But it is temporary.

You’ve got to give her time. She has been through quite a large procedure – I know it’s a common one but it’s still pretty major! Now she has an influx of hormones and she needs time to get back to herself. I know it’s disheartening but really, this ‘after spay wild behaviour’ is quite common. It doesn’t mean she will always be this way.

Ok, thank you everyone. I was really worried. She keeps sitting under a chair in a corner away from us and grunts and runs away from when we try to pet her. Poor thing is so all set with us! ?

I’ve said this in a previous post (I think) that mine took 3 months for me to see a difference.
i know it’s hard, and that for kids 1 day seems like 1 month (lol!), but they will have to be patient until her hormones calm down and then they will see a difference.
She definitely won’t like being picked up at the moment on account of her op scar..

Don’t regret having her spayed, when she’s all scrummy and cuddly and caring, you’ll have her for so much longer thanks to the op

The kids must know what it’s like to not feel well…. so they’ll understand

You could try just sitting on the floor with treats in hand so that when/if she comes near, you can offer her something yummy. That might cheer her up a bit. Just don’t pet her too much. Maybe just pet her once when she’s eating the treat and then hands off of her. See if that helps
