I got my first bunny about 3 weeks ago and I am quickly turning into a bunny mom. However when I got Buddy his nails were longgg and super sharp. I have not even attempted to trim them because I want to build trust with him. I was scared that if I trim them I will lose all the trust I’ve built with him. I have read on some forums that its a chore to trim for every one. But I really need some advice on what to do! Lol. I know it cannot be comfortable for him to have those long nails but I dont want to scar him forever, lol. Help!

At this point I’ve completely bonded with both of my buns; I’ve had Eve for three or four months and Theo for two. And I’m ashamed to say I just trimmed their nails for the first time last week. I’d attempted it before, but I was terrified I’d lose all trust I’d built with them or that I’d do it wrong. Every attempt ended after one nail getting trimmed and then letting them go because of how terribly they were panicking. Finally, I just got a thin blanket and scooped each bunny up (separately, obviously haha) and just held them tight and trimmed their nails. I felt pretty terrible; they each were clearly panicking and breathing rapidly. For the next hour, Eve ran from me and Theo just plain ignored me. But right after an hour or so had passed, they’d calmed down and acted like nothing happened and licked me and let me pet them as usual. The only advice I have is, watch demonstration videos (especially the HowCast one) for a general idea of what you’re in for, scoop Buddy up with a blanket, and endure the experience together. I know it’ll get easier each time I do it, but it really does suck, especially with new buns:/

Thanks for all the advice and settling the fact that it’s just as hard for everyone else. I think I’ll wait another month or so before I try for the first time. I may even call a few vets office to see how much nail trimming is. Anything to get out of being the bad guy. Thanks again!

Some buns are very good for nail trimming, I’ve been lucky with mine, I just lay them on their back on my lap, with their heads still tipped up and trim them quick. Right now start handing their feet and rubbing their toes, it will help make nail trimming less of a traumatic thing. Then I always give yummy treats when we are all done

I haven’t got any advice, but just wanted to say I’ve had my two buns for a month now and have only just ordered some nail clippers! I didn’t want to break their trust, either, so completely understand where you’re coming from. I’m terrified at doing it, too. Good luck, hope it all works out.

I had my bun’s claws clipped at the vets – they did Buttercup’s at her post op check up and they did Peanut’s whilst he was under anesthetic for his neuter. I don’t feel confident doing it so I’ll probably get the vets to do it the next couple of times.
