Hi everyone, bit worried about one of my bunnies, Chewie. She was her usual friendly self this morning, but when I home this evening, she was very skittish. I went over to her, she ran to her water bowl, started flicking water (very deliberately!) out of her water bowl, then ran off flicking her feet – a lot! I know foot flicking is a sign she’s very annoyed, but should I be concerned about flicking water out of her water bowl? Could something have happened while I was out that made her scared? She’s a free-range bun with her bonded friend Woolly.

I dont know if the water flicking and her being nervous are related. One of my bunnies loves to flick water around if he finds a puddle, and sometimes from their water bowl. Has anything changed in the last few days? Sometimes a change, even a small one, can cause a bun to become anxious for a few days. Maybe a sound happened while you werent around, and she became a bit skittish because she didnt know what the sound was

My bunny always, since little, knocks over his food bowl, then with his teeth, picks up the bowl and throws it to the side.

He’s always done this, so I didnt think there was something wrong…..is there?

Postman, that’s not a sign of something wrong. If a bunny has a food bowl that he can toss around, he will toss it around. My Bam does it all the time. You can give him other things to toss around, like plastic baby keys or just empty toilet rolls.

Snowleopard, flicking water deliberately is not a behavior I have experience with, but foot-flicking is a sign that the bun is disgruntled. This behavior could have helped with survival back in the day when your bunny’s ancestors were wild rabbits. If you can kick dust (or water) into the eyes of your enemy, you have a better chance at getting away. Almost anything can scare a bunny, often things (sounds, scents) that our human senses aren’t fine-tuned enough to pick up on, like unfamiliar sounds or scents. I don’t think you have cause for concern if she has a good appetite and acts normally now.

Thank you for your replies. Thank you so much for your explanation, bam. Unfortunately it looks like Chewie has GI stasis as she stopped eating and pooping completely a little while after this happened.
